2K high idle - any advice...?

Hi Chaps,

I know what your gonna say and i have searched the archives and found loads but nothing that has cured my problem...

It started a few weeks ago when the idle would be erratic and then the engine would stall, this then went away and came back again the other day. I read a bit in the bible about the coolant temperature sender, so i bought a new one and fitted it. Now i have the opposite, it idles at around 2k and then after about 30secs goes to normal (1k) but when driving it doesnt go below 2k so it feels like cruise control.

I have done the following:
cleaned stepper and checked that it is working (when i turn off the ignition it winds back in fully)
Reset ECU.

I am contemplating buying a new stepper but am not convinced this will work as it seems that there is just some delay in something telling the ECU that i am giving no gas?

I have also checked the coolant as it seems (coincidence) to be running slightly hotter than usual?? And also bled the system for air locks (there were none)

I dont know if it a suspect Coolant temp sender as i got it from a landy dealer and it is a 3rd party part??

Mine was doing that and it turned out to be a bit of dirt in the vacuum advance pipr, a quick blow and it was cured, hope you're as lucky. peter

I assume you've checked the simple things like the throttle cable and the throttle linkage to ensure the butterfly is fully against the idle stop and not sticking etc. (incidentally I had a situation recently where one of the bolts holding the throttle spindle bearing onto the bracket came loose and jammed the throttle open!! Fortunatley I was staionary at the time and the engine only sat at 3000 rpm ).
Check for anty possible air leaks into the plenum, all vacuum fittings and tappings etc, leaking stepper motor gasket?? IMO The new coolant sensor sounds rather suspect since this started after fitting this .
