Sat Nav and the Speed Pulse sensor
Discussion
Hi, apologies as my normal log in (Puffsorted) is stuck! at the moment (and our email server is junking Pistonheads mail as Spam Doh! - Ted Help!!)
:D :D :D I have done it and it works!!! :D :D
Below is how I did it because I know several people were in the same boat as me.
Installed a Pioneer ANH-P9R into the Chim. I tapped into the Speed Sensor above on the right hand side of the diff. There were two wires coming out of the sensor a Red and a Black, these then went into a plastic connector cable tied around a Chassis tube (only inches from the sensor) and emerged out the other side as Grey and Black. I spliced into the Grey one and set the wheel calibration on the Head Unit to Unknown, went for the calibration drive and it picked up the pulses straight away (and the speedo still works fine). Proceeded for a nice long test of the navigation (40 miles) and absolutly perfect. After much pain and thought it now works and I couldn't be happier

Martin - When I fitted my Pioneer AVIC-X1 I took the pulse from the pulse unit near the speedo, the dash top was off to fit the sat nav aerial anyway.
Seemed like the easier option for me.
I thought that as well but after much swearing I gave up on taking the dash top off. I have mounted the GPS aerial just behind where the seatbelt guide is behind the passengers left shoulder. Works fine even through the rear screen and is pretty much hidden from view.Big Al. said:
Fast Veeeeery Fast, so different to drive.
and you?
Still plodding on with the boring old trouble free V8 for now, have not heard anything to make me want to trade up yet.
Just been to Italy and back again, did not miss a beat, costs little to run and does not go wrong - famous last words

Not as bad as people make out, if you fancy another go I can give you some pointers should the need arise.
I might take you up on that offer. I found the two on the passenger side (not that I could get a spanner on them!)
Whats the procedure for the drivers one?

All three are removed with a shortish 10mm combination spanner. The left hand one is the easiest to get off. The middle one is also easy but you need to watch out for self tapper screw ends where you put your hand in unless you want to be a blood donor. The one on the right you just need a long arm aimed at the base of the windscreen, locate the stud and nut before you start and then you know where the spanner needs to go. A bit of double sided tape on the washers helps when it comes to refit.
Do you have a reason to remove it now or have you already done what you needed to do?

Not really now the Sat Nav is in. The only thing that bugs me is the heater controls. The bottom one is misaligned so the LED disappears behind the dash on the left handside and won't fully move over to the right. I guess it just needs the cable sadjusting by about an inch.
Sorted

Great news
As you know, I'm looking to do this also. I had a quick look around the car last night. Do you know the route that the grey cable carrying the speed pulse takes through the car? I know it ends up at pin 6 of the ECU and the speedo, but I think my chances of finding it in the mass of other cables in the loom by the ECU is slim. I'm really trying to splice into it as close to the satnav headunit as possible. Thanks,
Jon.

Its somewhere through the centre console. When I traced mine from the Diff it disappeared up into the car, near where the back of the centre console would start (the console looks quite easy to remove, two screws at the front and a couple under the little panel at the back, but the door release cabling put me off that idea), and not along the Chassis rails. The ECU idea was actually my second point of call after the back of the speedo but I took one look at the wiring loom going to the ECU and chickened out of that as well.
I talked to a Sat Nav installation company who were really helpful, considering I wasn't buying anything off them - they had some info on TVR's they had done and each time they had taken the feed off the sensor wire at the diff end. They seemed to think that any voltage fall off because of the length of the run would be negligible - it certainly hasn't affected my speedo or idle control. For neatness I would have to say the Pistonheader RIBOL has the right idea, if you can be bothered to take the dash top off, but I gave up on the bolts after about half an hour trying. I didn't bother running the reverse gear sensor feed. I used the Sat Nav from my house (Romford) to the Porsche BBQ via the White Hart on Tuesday night and back to test the accuracy and it was perfect taking me back through the country lands on the way home when I told it I wanted to avoid the A12
