Rear Wheel Bearings
Discussion
Evening all, after a little assistance...
Ive just converted my chimaera to 5 stud hubs and as part of this I’ve replaced the rear wheel bearings. But I can’t for the life of me seem to do them up where there is no play.
The bearings were supplied by racetech and are tapered. The old ones were also tapered so all good there.
I’ve fitted bearings as per the old ones and new seals. I put the stub axle back in then the thick washer and nut. Torqued up to 330NM.
Both sides have play of a similar amount which just does not feel right.
What am I missing. I’ve been told to over torque to pull axle in further and then back off and re-torque. This has led to stripped threads on axles so replacements needed. Surely shouldn’t need to do so tight to get rid of play...
Stumped....
Cheers

Over tightening will not work
the running clearance is built into the bearing centre distance piece and the bearing carriers and stub/axle combined, what brand are the bearings? the actual bearings not the boxes they came in , was there any evidence of the wear in the carrier bores ? scoring signs of bearing spin etc? there will be no detectable play at the wheel when all is well & correct

Maybe Borg and Beck? I replaced bearing and the carrier/shell it sits in?
Is it likely to be a bearing issue then? I presume they are meant to be tapered as I've seen some that are not...

It was this kit, for both sides....

Just been and checked as I had one hub back in pieces and the bearings are Borg and Beck. The races are pressed into the center as far as they can go from each side before the bearings and then seals. I presume this is correct...
I've found a source for timken ones, are they a better option and should i just start again... lol

I think the bearings are the issue! I’ve stripped one hub back out and the new Borg and beck sit lower in the race than the timkens meaning they touch each other before full tightness so are not tight in the race, causing movement... wonderful....
What are the chances of Racetech replacing or refunding I wonder.....

Some generic crap bearings with B & B etched on IMO
nothing to do with the original Borg and Beck by the way who also did not manufacture bearings , like I say lots of Mickey Mouse crap out there now even Firstline and QH etc use to box decent quality brands like I suggested earlier , looks like your getting somewhere
do not mix up bearing races and cups they are paired/matched assemblies
