Up until yesterday the temperature guauge has been operating normally. (Thermostat replaced 6 months ago.) Then yesterday morning when started up, the guage measured the water temp. as around 50deg, and didn't budge above this. Strange, I thought, as it was a pretty hot day. Set off from Surrey to Oxon, fans came on after a while, apparently operating normally and independently of what the guauge was reading.

When I came to start the car for the return trip I watched the dial, pin moved about a millimetre and no more. Didn't even get to 50. Since then, been on default nil reading and refusing to operate, apart from the millimetre nudge it does on startup. Temperature sensors all appear to be working fine as fans operating normally again today.

I will take it in to be looked at, but am hoping to have a few 'independent' suggestions beforehand.

Anyone got any ideas on what the problem could be?

Cheers,
Sena

The fans are seperate from the guage. The "otter" turns the fans on and the temp guage sender behind the distributor, does the guage. If you are a serp, then you can use the "spare" (Range Rover use this one) guage sender on top of the head, removes the chances of air locks, etc and will not under-read on those cold days.

Had the same problem. Turned out to be the "temperature sender" which bolts on near the distributor. £8 from dealer. Been fine ever since.

Hi Sena,

You could first just unplug the sendor wire (a bit fiddly but you can just get at it) and then reconnect it. Could just be a loose connection or covered in crap.

DAVID B - where is the landrover sendor? is it next to the coolant temp sendor mine has a funny sort of plug in there?? looks kind of like a bleed valve or something??

Lig.

Thanks all. Will don my mechanic's head this evening and investigate the sender... Hopefully it's nothing more!

Cheers, Sena.

If you have the "spare" it will be on top of the head, next to the two wire ECU temp sender. It has a single 4mm round terminal, so a variable resistor and a couple of plugs and away you go. If you want part numbers, email me.
