I am getting my engine stripped and rebuilt (60,000miles). I am getting the heads ported and polished and I also want to upgrade the cam. Can anyone recommend the best one to go for. I wish to keep the car driver friendly on the roads but want a bit more oomph!:driving:

I went for the MC2 cam, bit more power from 3,200rpm upwards. However, more 'lumpy' below around 2,300 rpm, cured this with a Mark Adams Tornado chip.

My advice....whatever cam you go for, ask about any side-effects or disadvantages. I didn't ask the local TVR dealer and none where pointed out to me and I felt they should have been, NOT just the positives.

Steve.

P.S. Nice motor.

The 214 works well in my 4.3 - peak power @ 5300 ish. and will go over 6000 if I let it. Very driveable, good for 300 in my car. I'd seriously consider big valves as well while you're at it.

I can help you with the first 4:

MC1 Mild upgrade, generally doesn't loose out anywhere and can be ran ok on a standard map. I've never heard a bad word said about this cam.

MC2 As above but sacrifices a little low end for better mid range and high engine speed power.

H404 Supersedes the MC2 and is a little wilder; I purchased this cam two days ago and will be fitting it soon

All of the above cams use hydraulic tappets, therefore they won't have any tappyness or require frequent adjustment.

P404 This cam is a mechanical version of the H404 (was actually out long before the H404) and is slightly more aggressive. This will give you the most power out of all of these cams but will be the least road friendly, although not that bad.

You can run all of these cams without a re map but to get the best out of them a re map is desirable and will make a big difference to the hairier cams.

If you use you car on track loads then go for the P404, if not then take your pick of the others to suit the characteristics you want.

Most of this info comes from reading post from the likes of Guillotine and Mongoose and the odd conversation with the V8 Developments boys.

Hope that helps a little

Thanks David H. Great answer.
I found the others on rpiv8.com. Not sure if they are any different from those you mentioned though.

To update, the engine will be going to V8developments for strip and rebuild including stage 3 heads and bigger valves.
The cam being fitted in from Kent cams and is apparently known as the 'Vizzard cam' after David Vizzard who designed it. Anyone know if this is the h404, MC2 or something else???
