RX7 v Chim 500

I've got a Chim 500 (97) and a friend of mine has laid down a challenge with his RX7 - 1/4 mile at Santa Pod (RWYB).

He hasn't had any mods done to the RX, but I know its recently been tuned and rolling roaded etc (he was putting out 235bhp at the wheels - don't know about torque!!)

I had a new cam in my Chim last year (just a normal cam) and my car runs nice but I've got no idea what sort of bhp I would be putting out (although I'm sure it won't be 340 or whatever is printed)

Question is, should I take the challenge?

How close is it likely to be? I couldn't stand to be beaten by the RX - especially at Santa Pod, that would hurt. :irked:

Any predictions?

Course you should - it'll be a lottery down to who's best at launching and doesnt' fluff the changes anyway!

I'd suspect it'll be close if you both drive the same.

I quite seriously looked at an RX7 before buying my Chim and they are damned quick cars. The Chim will easily out do one on torque but it'll be a close call in terms of acceleration. Pretty much down to driver skill and gear changes.
I am writing the above though based on a comparison with a 4.0 Chim - not having driven a 500 I can't give a better educated comparison.

Provided you can get the power down initially, and don't balls up any gear changes - you should take him

If you're running a sorted Chim 500 and you haven't got lead boots, I can't believe for a minute the RX7 will give you any concerns. What's the difference in the power/weight ratio ?.

Stock 500's run anywhere between 255 and 280bhp (This according to Mark Adams), and 275 to 300lbft of the twisty stuff.

With your lower kerb weight, you should muller a standard RX-7, particularly if your is towards the top end of these numbers.

The Chim needs a service anyhow, maybe I'll get it on a rolling road / tune to make sure it's all as should be.

Spend a couple of hundred on a Nitrous kit and don't tell anyone,they'll be all wondering how your doing high 11's
low 12's ..

I did go to Santa Pod a few weeks ago and saw an RX7 do the 1/4 mile and I think his time was 14.?

What would you expect the Chim 500 to do it in then?

NB what's in the Nitrous kit?

A stock Fd, with a decent launch, be mid/late 13's to 14.0's. This one with 235rwhp is a bit over ste stock power levels (255-265 for older models, 280 for the 99+ models. flywheel hp). This one is likely to be just shy of 300 flywheel (as mine is 240/300 wheels/fly)...

Gaz - most FDs are 1250-1290kgs dry.

why dont u ask to have a go in his car and see what u think.......after going out in it,look confident(even if his feels quicker)and say to him "ok,winner gets the other persons car"....he should sh?t himself and backout thinkin u know yours is quicker!!!! worth a laugh,and if his car felt quicker he will back out anyway...win/win situation haha.

mate! i,ve had 2 rx7's scooby's evo bla! bla! my last car was a 911 (993) c2s. i've now got a 5ltr chimaera, in a straight line i wouldn't even mention the rx7 in the same breath it'll kill it unless u've got a serious problem.

Seriously tho. I'm quite keen to race him, I just don't want to let the side down. I need to make sure the RX gets put in its place ie about 500M behind me

I had a chat with Mark Adams and I think I'll get my baby tuned and chipped, then bring it on.

I can probably find a 'chipped and tuned' FD to play with if you fancy racing on even terms.... you can run 9.8's right?

Seriously tho. if others want to join in the RX / Chim challenge, maybee I'll put a post up when I know a date, just in case anyone happens to be there or wants to join in.

I don't mind racing anyone on the strip, except for that bl&&dy jet car that would rip the fibrglass off my poor tiv

If you do that I'll drop a link in at FDUK and mazdaRotaryClub - there aren't may 7's on here really... Could be a good fun day out.

I wouldn't fancy being caught in the jet cars wake either...
