got 3rd instead of 5th gear - whoops...(chim 500)

i was having fun on sunday

i was in 4th gear giving it some serious beans... then, as i was changing into 5th i mistakingly got 3rd. crap

as you would expect the engine revved hard but i instantly put the clutch back in.

now i have a horrible wirring gear noise from the gearbox tunnel when idling in neutral..... i feel sick when i think about it..... it hurts me to know i've mistreated my TVR with such a school boy error.

but the noise stops when i put the clutch in.

any ideas. have i done something awful....?!!

sounds like the trust bearing to me, not fortune to fix.

If it were the THrust bearing I would expect it to be noisy when you depress the clutch (ie when the bearing is taking load and spinning)and quieten when your foot is off it. Noises that are there when idling in neutral and disappear when you depress the clutch suggest a gearbox origin, since the internals are spinning so long as the clutch is engaged and stop when the clutch is depressed (assuming no clutch drag).
I have had odd noises from my (T5) box at times sometimes after giving it a bit of stick, to the extent that I have feared the worse, but then they have just dissapeared for no apparent reason. I even got underneath and physically checked the gearbox oil at one stage fearing that it was dry! (it wasnt and the oil was clear and healthy).
An over rev is much more of a threat to the engine than the gearbox, so if that is sweet then I'd be surprised if you'd done any serious mischief.

Nope, thrust release bearings rattle with the clutch out (i.e. foot off pedal). When you depress the pedal the bearing is pushed against the clutch fingers which stops the noise.

Can't see how an over-rev could damage it though?

Yes agreed, the thrust bearing can chatter when unloaded and that's normal , but if there was actual damage to the trust bearing (which was the issue) then that would produce a whining or rumbling sound / vibration when under load.
So I stand by my original statement M'Lud

Everytime I've had a thrust bearing problem I've only noticed the horrid rattling when its unloaded. But yep, I'm sure you're right on a wirring noise as it wouldn't be spinning were it not engaged.

Then we're both right! Excellent result

Yes, the car has obviously lost faith in your ability to change gear reliably.

All you need to do is slowly re-establish its faith in you, perhaps by performing lots of well-executed changes for the next few weeks. The sound, which is actually the car whimpering with fear in expectation of an imminent botched 'shift, should then go away.




Seriously, it does sound like the thrust bearing. I've experienced a similar symptom myself.
