Hi again guys,

The diagnostic onboard module has finally picked up a fault code after 88 miles following an overnight ECU reset.

Great, at last, a possible pointer to some of the cars odd behaviour over recent weeks.

Great, except the code produced is 26 ?

I have no listing for this at all !

Can anyone help me with a full listing of ECU fault codes ?

I'd post on the TVRCC but thought PH may have a wider audience for a quick response as I need to get the reader back to it's owner soon.

I use the list from Peter Beech's workshop notes, that doesn't show code 26.

Thats why I'm a bit stuffed Pete, fitted the on board reader, and got an 88

Had just maxed it to the brim with Optimax a few hours prior.

Left the reader on, ECU disconnected all night.

Reconnected AM, shows 02 - good, ECU separation from power source.

IGN off, IGN on, and show nowt so clear.

Ran for two days , started from work tonight having 88 miles on the speedo since reset, shows 26 ?????

What the hell is that - even if I read it upside down it would be 95 or such like ....

Help again Peter.

PS The link to Peter Beech seems to have gone bye byes too

Here are the fault codes listed in the excellent Peter Beech workshop notes. I hope he won't mind me reproducing it here:

Code Meaning Comments
02 Live feed to ECU has been interrupted Normal if ECU has been disconnected to clear old fault codes. Code 02 will clear if ignition turned off for 30 secs then on again.
03 Stored data corrupted since last trip No useful information available. Test drive and try again.
12 Airflow meter out of range Possible air leak or wiring fault.
14 Coolant thermistor out of range Faulty sensor or wiring.
15 Fuel thermistor out of range Faulty sensor or wiring.
17 Throttle sensor out of range Sensor needs adjustment or is faulty or has wiring fault. This can cause low speed misfires
18 Throttle sensor output too high when air flow low Large air leak between throttle butterfly and A/F meter or faulty throttle sensor or A/F meter.
19 Throttle sensor output too low when airflow high Faulty A/F meter or throttle sensor.
21 Tune resistor out of range Check tune resistor resistance.
23 Low fuel pressure Blocked fuel filter or faulty pump or pressure regulator. Valid for cat cars only.
25 Misfire at full load Faulty plugs, leads, electronic ignition unit, distributor or coil, low fuel pressure or valve or head gasket leak. See 40 and 50. Valid for cat cars only.
28 Air leak Leak in A/F meter hoses, injector seals, inlet manifold gasket, plenum gasket, servo or crankcase vent hoses or Lambda sensors. Valid for cat cars only.
29 Checksum error The ECU is f****d.
34 Fuelling fault in nearside injector bank Injector or Lambda sensor wiring fault, faulty injectors, air leak at injector seals or inlet mainfold, blocked injectors. Valid for cat cars only.
36 Fuelling fault in offside injector bank As above but for cylinders 2-4-6-8 only. Valid for cat cars only.
40 Misfire on nearside bank As 25 but for cyclinders 1-3-5-7 only. Valid for cat cars only.
44 Nearside Lambda sensor out of range Faulty or lead-poisoned sensor or sensor wiring fault. Valid for cat cars only.
45 Offside Lambda sensor out of range As above. Valid for cat cars only.
48 Stepper motor fully open above 500 rpm or fully closed above 750 rpm Sticking stepper valve, incorrect base idle speed adjustment, air leak on non-cat cars, incorrect stepper motor adjustment, incorrect throttle butterfly adjustment, rough running because of fuel or ignition or mechanical faults.
50 Misfire on offside bank A 25 but for cylinders 2-4-6-8 only. Valid for cat cars only.
59 ECU unable to distinguish between faults 23 and 28 Fault occured for insufficient time for ECU to diagnose.
68 Road speed sensor output too low at medium rpm and high air flow Possible sensor or wiring fault (will also cause wrong speedo readings on electrical speedo cars). Valid for cat cars only.
88 Power-up check Not a fault. Sometimes displayed on first connecting test module.

So there is no fault code 26 and it didn't happen. Reset and see if it comes back?

The bible also has a list but I added a comments column where I have added things to check etc. Pages 94/95. I haven't seen a code 26. Could it be a faulty LED segment and you are seeing code 28?

Very odd indeed. Didn't touch a thing since the code came up - honest. Turned ignition on - code display is clear - hoorah I thought.

Got to work 12 miles away, looked at display - code 26 again !! Rats.

More spooky, lunchtime, ign on, checked display - nowt.

So very confusing, displayed 88 on first connection Steve, so segments seem OK, have also seen the 02 since the ECU was reset.

Thanks for listing the fault codes Peter, but as you say no 26 - and I'm not seeing any other code come up.

Did have the car in the absolute worst rain I've ever seen yesterday (albeit stationary) until 5PM so may have been a red herring moisture issue.

Would have thought if anything was significantly wrong it would have reported on the display within a few miles.

i.e. If theres a dodgy Lambda sensor the ECU would pick up this problem fairly quickly in the sensor out of range section.

The tester by the way is only on the car because I STILL after weeks of checking and minor fiddling get it to run like it did when I picked the car up back in February.

Did want to have a Mark Adams chip fitted, but wanted the car to be running as best I could make it before seeing Mark.

Seems a bit naughty to take a poorly running car in to Mark, and also naughty to fit a chip to mask out some of the issues.

Mark will ensure that the car is absolutely spot on before he remaps it, so no worries about hiding problems with the remap.

Thats the problem Peter, I'd be so embarrased taking it to Mark in it's current running state.

Tis looking like I will have to though.

Anyway its all below the 3.1k RPM mark so it will have to wait now as I have a Donnington trackday on 5th August !

Funnily enough though, since the overnight ECU reset rather than a 30 second job, the car does seem to be getting better, might just be outside temp and damper colder intake air though.

The diagnostic reader you guys are talking about, is this available to buy somewhere, if so could you point me in the right direction. It looks very useful, could you connect it up, go for drive and it display any faults it has seen during the journey.

Does anyone know of a laptop connection with software to do the above and more?

Many thanks
Chimy

Chimy, yep can pass on the details:-

Richard Fisher is the hirer, sure he will pick up on this thread soon. He is on PH.

Device itself is a Range Rover On-Board Diagnostic Display.

Shows faults codes only, no PC connection.

Although Mark Adams did a post around May time I think it was about the possibility of developing some software. Not sure of progress on that project - Mark ?

Device hires out at a very reasonable price.

My car is not showing any fault codes at all now not even the rogue 26 (think that was due to damp around battery box and ECU area)

So no MIL light, no faults showing after a few days driving, so if Richard doesn't get hold of you or post back here email me for full details.

Service and information with a smile

Many thanks Richard, it's been a very interesting experience with the diagnostic gadget.

Certainly has helped me no end.

I bought the rovacom lite device, this gives you live data on lambda sensor voltage, temperature, road speed sensor and injector pulse lengths, as your driving (which you can record directly onto your portable) as well as fault codes its is a little bit pricy but works very well, mine is for the lucas 14cux ECU, not sure if that is fitted to all chimeras they do a version for the Lucas Gems system which is fitted to later Range Rover models. Worth thinking about if you have a Landrover vehicle as well since you can buy the modules for all Landrover vehicles. Might be worthwile if you clubbed together with a few fellow owners.

bit late with this reply but around £350 for the 14cux system i use on my discovery so probably worth it for me see www.rovacomlite.com
The latest version of the software allows you to record all the functions live and puts them in a csv file so you could find intermittant faults more easily I recorded about 30mins data so if I have a problem later I can see whats changed, its definitely better than just looking at a 2 digit code

Thats a fascinating piece of kit. According to the blurb on the website the unit will give you information on "Front screen load inputs" - any idea what that means? Presumably a Range Rover function.

Probably for the heated front screen where fitted, the additional load on the alternator needs more fuel, my car has a/c which has a similar load effect counteracted by changing the fueling map presumably.

Bob.

I don't know what the original running problem you had was, or if it is still a problem, but I've been sniffing around and think that error code 26 might mean:

Lambda sensor error - fuelling weak.

Would this tie in with the problem you were having?
