Intermittent Ticking Sound under acceleration...

Damn car (love it, mostly...). I've just driven 300 miles to my folks house in North Wales. During the latter stages of the drive the car has developed an odd ticking sound. Only happens under power/acceleration. Rate varies a bit with revs.

I will, of course, take it to Racing Green the minute we get back to Southern Sunnier Climes.

But has anyone had this happen? Its weeing down at the mo' so I'm not yet looking in the engine compartment. But any helpful suggestions of what to check in the morning would be gratefully recieved!

I can always get it recovered if I really shouldn't drive it...

Initial thought would be either a leaky manifold gasket, exhaust joint (manifold to Y piece) or hole in the manifold. Worth getting it checked out though.

Thanks for that...I did think that such a problem could be it...I'll poke around in the morning and see if I can get an accurate source for the noise...

Doesn't seem to affect the way it drives at all...

Nope. Definitely not pinking. I know what that sounds like and its not it. At first I thought there might be some problem with the belts but they seem to be running freely...

God I love Pistonheads. Put on a concerned post. Within two minutes knowledgable, helpful posts appear with ideas of what to go check.

Hi mate, just picking my new chim up tomorrow. When test drove the little girl last week had exactly the same sound you describe. Dealer said it was the manifold gasket as friend said above. So that where i would check first?

My first one did EXACTLY the same

It turned out to be a fine crack in the cylinder head gasket

Replaced and never heard it again

Took the garage 3 visits and 13 months to find it!

It was only under heavy acceleration

We'll probably let Racing Green fix it. Clearly it needs doing but I'm now happy to drive it home...

Gaskets changed. Noise gone. Thanks chaps!
