Hi does anyone know if replacing Steering rack seals is a DIY job or are special tools needed?

I've got a 400 Chim with modified front brakes and steering. Rear wheel on the front, big disk, ap racing brakes and also power steering added. The problem is the steering goes tight then releases through a turn or even lane changes. Interested in any comment, but was wondering, ive renewed the steering shaft uj s, how hard is it to refurb, seal change a power rack?

Easy enough to remove the rack as a diy job, comes out through the drivers side, only one place to send is Killey Clinton Birmingham

Sounds like pressure lag/lack of press basically your waiting for the system to catch up frown but try removing the res an back flushing with cellulose thinners/gun wash and refilling with fresh PSF before doing anything hasty , if this works renew the res anyway when your convinced you have a fix , you would be suprised with hyd PAS its sometimes the simplest of things , make sure your certain of the steering column UJ integrity first however

Good advice, you must do this first.

yes, do check the uj's. Had wayward steering on a range rover (poor at best of times) which went back to garage 3 times. Plan was to change the steering box but mechanic took the shaft with 2 uj's off and noticed they could not be moved by hand. Soaked in paraffin, re-lubed, refitted and perfect. Still working 10 years later.

Hi thanks for the advice, I was hoping it would br UJs and replaced them, not fixed, I flushed and refilled Fluid, no luck, introduced stop leak, no change. Did the u bend mod, replaced banjo washers, still no change. I've got a seal kit but unsure who to trust it with in Sydney AUS. Should I be doing something with the pump?

Take it too your nearest Rack repair company.
Don’t mess around with it if your unsure as it’s failure could be messy!

Good advice. I've flushed the oil and got rid of the leaks. Although I purchased stop leak I was reluctant to use it and mask any faults. Also the oil I used said it had added stop leak. I've since revised this ( after eliminating the leaks) and decided to add the stop leak as well . Thought I couldn't loose. Well it does seem to have improve things. I'm waiting for an independent tester (the wife) to confirm this. Any thoughts on using Stop Leak in Hyd systems? Gareth
