What’s the general consensus on refurbing S1 wheels, Have had a mess lighting sanding and polishing up, works well but takes a lot of time to do. Is aqua or bead blasting an option, anyone had this done?.

Should I send send out for powder coating.

Or has anyone got a decent set of 4 wheels for reasonable money before I spend half my life sanding and polishing these or going down the other routes.

Most companies who offer to refurbish wheels either powder-coat or paint. Both of these options tend to look rather dull - grey or silver, rather than shiny/polished.

I wanted my S2 wheels to look original, and the only way to do that AFAIK is to get them diamond-cut and re-lacquered. TrackVRoad at Clitheroe did mine a few years ago. It wasn't cheap (£380 plus VAT for the set) but they came out nicely.

Thanks for both your responses. Spent 4 hours on one wheel using various methods, sanding, abrasive pads, wire wool, Dremel with abrasive wheel, brass and steel wheels. Came up pretty good but to be honest still some light staining that just won’t go away, you wouldn’t notice unless you were 2ft away, so going to paint and lacquer them.

Have refurbed wheels previously as had a car with 20” rims that got damaged on a monthly basis (narrow lanes where I live), and never had an issue, will etch prime, paint and then lacquer, will post the results.

They do look nice, i wonder if they can even diamonds cut the older style like mine as the centre is a big curve. Times against me a little, plus on a budget as this has been a major undertaking with everything to do.

Work in progress. Will look shinier when lacquered, but need to give the black infills another coat and fine finishing yet. Just doing the one for now to ensure the he quality/finish is up to scratch.

When I had a set of TVR wheels refurbished in 2017, I had them done in sparkle silver (metallic effect in the powder). It was no extra cost over normal silver. The photo doesn't show the sparkle particularly but I was happy with them:



The paint job looks good too.

It was a long time ago now (2005?) but it was about £50 a wheel I think. I've had a similar treatment on my Griff Estorils which was about the same again.

There many place still at around £200 for powder coat, or £250 for diamond cutting, but much more expensive to have the black sections done, so will plod on finishing my sample first, the blacks too glossy for my liking and a bit thick on the centre section (think the paint was going off) and hard to get perfectly circular, so going to sand back, paint the black in the centre first, blank off and the then do the silver. 3D Printed a blanking plate to fit over the hub to assist.

My understanding when I had my eight spokes done by diamond cut, is that they powder coat them black first, then diamond cut through the black face, leaving the inserts black and face silver. They did not make a fuss about charging more for the black bits in fairness. They were done by lepsons

Hi Pete - yes that's how it's done.

Hi Simon - where the S2 wheels diamond cut then? I thought they were just polished. Anyway, options
(a) get them blasted clean and then paint as your sample. (b) powder coat silver and paint in the black sections your self. You'll be quite good at it by the time you've done the 5th

Round 2. Let’s see how we get on with the blanking method. Paint black centre and infills, use blank plate on centre and tape infills, then silver.

Round 2 failed. Due to the letters in the inserts got overspray in the black. Round 3, spray silver, laquer, tape over holes from finished face and spray black inserts after from behind. One thing that does work is Filling the black will permanent marker, and you can get nice sharp lines.
