Anyone upgraded the T5 gearbox to a Tremec TKX gearbox ? Looking at doing this in the winter months so any advice would be great

There was another thread about this gearbox earlier in the month that died very quickly

Why would you consider this box anyway? It is more expensive; is still only 5 speed; it isn't a direct replacement, so it will require a bit/a lot of fettling etc. to make it fit, assuming that it can be made to fit at all.

And all for what? It can handle more power and torque than your TVR has or can handle. Maybe the shift quality is a bit better, but the original box is fine in that regard. It's just an expensive hassle that you don't need.

There really is no need to change if your power levels are below 400bhp.
I have been putting over 500 bhp through my T5 for years. Granted i have had a couple rebuilds and some uprated parts but it just shows what a good box the T5 really is.

Having said that, I am putting an order in for the TKX soon as i have plans to increase power further and i need the improved high rpm gearchages for my drag racing pursuits.

As has been said it looks like a fair deal with the box alone at £2580 + vat but then you need the rover V8 bellhousing, a slave kit, maybe a Mcleod flywheel and RST clutck depending on intended power levels.
Adding everything up that i want/need i am looking at 5k.

Nigel, this is the box you need in your car. Speak to Roadcraft, they do all the bits you need.

Because my car was putting out 573hp and 610lb torque. I spoke with several gearbox builders first who were completely honest about what a T5 could do. wink I didn't want to skimp on anything. Oh, and the twin plate clutch was a delight to use too.

This should answer your question , it’s a newer design box, and like the idea of getting rid of that linkage yes a bit of work but that’s half the fun and why I like a tvr , t5 box I have at the moment has the quaife gear set

Well after a lengthy conversation with cts it looks like the T5 will be staying, no advantage in swapping out for a TKX, I have the quaife big gears and shot peened and bronze selector forks, might be some merit in the shorter tail section but that’s it. The TKX is a bigger job installing plus the remote slave sits right above the exhaust, and the forward gear location kits are not available yet from roadcraft

The quaife version is a different beast indeed and probably perfectly safe at your power levels Nigel.

Ive been chatting to Brian at roadcraft and he say he has sold to a few TVR owners and believes they have addressed the shifter position themselves.
There are now kits available from the US to utilise the forward position.
I am still looking at doing this conversion and also considering a 2.87:1 final drive. This will allow me to reach over 200 with a 'standard' 0.81 ratio 5th.
The ultimate aim is to crack that 200 on the Elvington mile.

It’s an option but the TKX supercedes the TKO, is much lighter, is similar in dimensions to a T5 and most importantly has much better hi rev gear change ability which I consider important.
