Ticking Noise From Engine

A ticking noise was noticed on my pre-purchase inspection with the comment "may or may not be important" or words to that effect.
I used injector cleaner and it seemed to go away. Now it, or another noise, is back but this time louder.
The noise emanates from the no. 7 cylinder and is more obvious under load. If I disconnect the injector so that cylinder is not firing the noise stops, the plug, lead and suppressor are all ok.
I can either start using cleaner/additive again, replace the injector or both but before I do that though can anyone think of anything else it might be?

Flintstone said:Good, that rules out most mechanical problems. I would go with the exhaust manifold suggestion. Not desperately urgent, but if left for a long time will gradually damage the sealing face of the head and manifold so don't ignore it.

Yup. Thats what mine was, I thought of a huge repair bill until I done a search for ticking on PH. This confirmed it was the manifold gasket. Left hand side, back. Try seeing if the bolts are loose as mine could almost be turned by hand!, the one right at the back underneath is best if car on ramp/stands as its a sod to get to.
TIP
1) Tie a bit of string to the spanner incase you drop it as things get very tight down there!
2) If you do replace the gasket get the extra kit that allows you to stop the nuts from vibrating loose again.

Hiya, Yes it could be the gasket, but may also be the rocker arm buckets that are loose or damaged. I had this on mine and have just had them replaced, along with the rocker cover gaskets, and the engine now sounds wonderful. No whistling, ticking or anything else untoward. Would be worth checking these as well as is a common problem on the Rover engines. Scott

Where is the noise coming from? It could be coming from inside the engine, or it could be as simple as a stone stuck in the fan belt. There isn't much point replacing gaskets or replacing rocker gear unless that's where the problem is. Did the people who did the work tell you this is where the noise was coming from?
well the garage thought, it was the rockers, that didnt help so when manifold gasket was change they noticed one of the bolts had been tapped and dyed ( i think thats what they said lol )so they redid that so it was a better fit, but noise still there, it seems to go under fast idle, but under normal driving conditions its still prominent. so i thinki shall save my pennies and in the winter have the tvr power engine upgrade, any one here had that done?
Forgot to mention, no sign of the gasket having failed. Had a good look and checked the pesky manifold bolts which are tighter 'n a nuns chuff.
No stones on the belt either. Noise coming from the wrong place and [u]disconnecting the injector stops the noise[/u]
Off to the shops for some 'U Beaut Injector Cleaner'. Failing that, a new injector.

Did they charge you for all that!!!!
I think you should find another garage unless you have a very capacious wallet! What's their philosophy? - Never mind making a diagnosis let's just try this.....

Snorky's excellent article (and other's helpful posts) enabled me to diagnose exhaust manifold gaskets as the problem in our Chimaera when we experienced a "ticking" under power from the engine bay recently.
All sorted now by replacing the gaskets...
