Hi Guys

First Merry Xmas and let's hope that 2023 has more to offer us!!

So here is a curious one, I have a late 1999 400 Chim it has partial conversions to LED lights so it has:

Brake, sidelights front, rear fog, number plate, interior light and speedo and Rev counter all have LEDs fitted.

Now I rarely drive the car at night but yesterday I drove home through the lanes and noticed that there was a slight flicker of them all with the engine running, with it off then no flickering. It seems to following the engine speed. It is not hugely noticeable but clearly something is adrift. I have checked all the likely earth culprits and cleaned and tightened everything.

Is this a sign of failing LEDs, alternator interference or ignition interference. Having them all on or some on has the same effect.

So any advice would be appreciated

TIA

Chris

Is it more of a surging than flickering?

If yes, I would suggest your alternator rectifier is on its way out

Have the LEDS always flickered or perhaps you have only just noticed it?

A common problem with cheap LEDS is they can pick up interference from the ignition circuit.

My Griffiths has LEDS all bought from:

No flickering at all.

Thanks all… I suspected the LEDs but I did check the alternator output and it appears steady on and off load.

The brightness seems constant with different engine speeds. As mentioned I have not noticed it before but in the daylight it’s not that noticeable but now I know it’s there I can see it!

I will source the replacements as mentioned… are the dial light ones easy to find as I want the right ones to hand once the dash is off?
