Hi,
This is my first post here so be gentle with me!
I've had my '98 4.0 Chim for almost 2 years now and still grinning from ear to ear every chance I get to drive it.
I'm fairly competant when it comes to general tinkering and so far i've only had to recon the steering rack, clean the stepper motor, replace the clutch slave cyl and clean up the rusty chassis rails and wishbones.
So its mostly been trouble free motoring, and now i'm more confident with/less worried about breaking it and more used to the power/handling of the car I'm toying with the idea of a few performance upgrades to regain that 'scared sh*tless' sensation!
Kinda wishing I'd bought a 5.0 from day one, but Craig at Peninsula reckons I can get into 5.0 territory with a few (relatively) simple tweaks/upgrades
So my question is - how much of an improvement would i see from, say, a twin plenum throttle, mild cam, decat and a chip? Even if i get 40Bhp from this, I'm still well short of a 5.0?
Any advice?

I would make sure that yours is running at its best and if you still want more then upgrade to a 500.
You'll have the hassle of finding another 'good one' but I think it will work out cheaper than trying to get 5 litre power from a 4. And you'll have the gobs of extra torque that come with the 5 litre.
The 4 litre is a damn quick car though.

Probably a good idea that I drive one.
I didnt get the chance when I bought my 4.0, it was the first one I drove, it scared me half to death, and I just fell in love with it. It just didnt seem necessary to look at any others.
Oh and the ladies really dig it, regardless of the missing Litre!!

No. Unless there's something particularly unique and irreplacable about your 4.0, trading it for a 500 is a no-brainer if you;re after extra performance. You will spend a *lot* of money getting similar performance to a 500, you'll need to spend even more time and money sorting the brakes and handling, insurance will cost more, and you'll never recoup the expense when you come to sell the car.

I cant say I havent thought about a cerb before. The impression i get is that its stupid fast but you've really got to thrash it to achieve best performance. I know its probably got more torque than the rv8, but i just love the way even my 4.0 pulls at such low revs in any gear - it feels like its effortlessly fast, and i love the sound of the bad boy v8, whereas the flat plane crank seems to be an aquired taste.

well thats my weekend sorted then! Thanks for your comments thus far.
What's the best route for tuning the 5.0? If i give myself a budget of around 3k what would give me a good starting point for further improvements?
I'm feeling rather power hungry at the moment!!
Cheers
Mitch
Firstly, if you really want extra power then I'll also say that you should go for a 5.0. Some people will say that a well sorted 4.0 will be just as quick as a duff 5.0, and they're right, but get a good one and it should more than satisfy your need for more power!!
Then, if you want to spend £3k tuning that you could do worse than having an ACT smooth bore induction kit, ACT Carbon Twin Plenum + trumpets etc, new injectors (or have your current ones properly cleaned) and then have it chipped. That lot should set you back almost exactly £3k and I'm led to believe should get you an extra 20-30bhp. Any 5.0 that's had that done to it should be plenty quick enough!!!
All the best - Chris
Welcome Mitchp
The 5 is your route - keep the option of roof down
Theres a good one going here www.drivestyleconvertibles.co.uk/stocklist/index.html
I know the car
PS - Your car looks identical to my old one "N---LJC"

listen to the nice man, he's right
Cheapest way to get a faster car is to sell what you have and buy a quicker one...

Another option... <a href="www.tvrpower.co.uk/4.to.5.litre.php">www.tvrpower.co.uk/4.to.5.litre.php</a>
For that kind of money you can buy a 5.3 from V8Dev. But then you still need to do the brakes, dampers etc etc.
Indeed, go for a 5.0, drive it for a while and then spend some dough on upgrades, that way you'll have dubble fun.
