Solvent for Waxoyl? Please help!

Just spent the entire day removing the crap powdercoating and rust from the outriggers inwards to the main rails.

The front wishbones have been replaced recently and the main chassis sections are in pretty good nick but I want to expoy mastic them at the same time as everything else.

How do I remove the waxoyl residue, scraping has got most of it but not all. White spirit isn't much use...

PS. Can't beleive the corrosion, its a '99 FFS! Still its all only surface rust and by this time I'm done it's gonna be bombproof....

White Spirit as you stated is the solvent for waxoyl, anything else, cellulose thinners for example, will work a treat, but will remove everything else !!

Likewise you could use carb cleaner or brake cleaner, a bit more expensive.

Best of all is elbow grease................!!!

Have fun and don't breath the fumes for too long !!

Correct but white spirit will leave its own residue. Much thinner and easier to get off but if you want a good clean contact surface you will need to get the white spirit residue off too. You'll need some basic pre-paint cleaner available from most motor-factors.

Maybe start with White Spirit to remove most of the Waxoil, and follow-up with some Meths (which is cleaner than White Spirit and is cheap) to remove the residue.

Slightly off topic but is it advisable to remove previous Waxoyl before applying a new coating or is it OK just to coat over the top of the old stuff?

It's better to if you can. You don't have to get it all off, just the drity surface.
