Hi All,

Just took delivery of some protec shocks for the Chim. I have seen threads on here regarding the damping settings however could anyone tell me what load they have on the springs, i.e if I could obtain a measurement that gives somewhere near optimum performance / ride height it would be appreciated. I have seen a measurement of 25mm from the bottom of the threaded body to the lower end of the spring but this seems really soft to me however if this is the experience of many I will go with the flow. Thanks in advance.

The distance from the bottom of the spring to the body depends on what spring rate you have, what free length the springs are, how much load you have in the car, and what ride height you're trying to achieve. As such it's much like how long is a piece of string ...

Why not fit them, and adjust the platform to get the ride height you want.

  • note always adjust the platform with the damper at full extension.

As always spitfire I am often looking for a simple answer to what is often a complicated question especially where suspension set up is concerned as everyone has there own preference

Why dont you try chassis corner plate to ground method for kick-off (flat level surface) 160-165 rear and 140-150 front , however remember to get the geo corrected/checked whatever you decide on or the car will track like a bh @ speed if its out enough ...... here you go just found this I also run these similar ride heights https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Well in essence it is fairly simple.
Fit and adjust to get desired ride height ( set at standard ride height for a Chim as anything else will effect the geo settings ) which might take a couple of attempts depending on spring rates.
Set adjusters at half way and see how it feels after test drives.
If it’s to soft adjust clicks clockwise to stiffen up via more damping anti clockwise to go softer.

If you wish to lower the car you will need to run hard settings as you WILL bottom out over bumps but mostly you’ll need to get geo re set to maintain the correct tyre contact patch as lowering it introduces more negative camber which is not very useful when driving straight lines.
Tyre wear will increase on the inside edge of the tyres and often the tyres angle will not help grip unless cornering at hi speed. In every other area including braking the car will perform worse generally if you have to much camber.
Put the car on a track and it’s a hole new ball game though wink
My point is anything other than standard ride height which is with bottom wishbones level you will have to have geo re set or your risking creating a dangerous car in some circumstances.
A TVR is very sensitive to ride height or poor geo settings.

It’s often said by taking it to a TVR Guru with the kit to set the car up including any changes you might desire including shock settings is some of the best money you will spend on the car.
You often find once the sweet spot is found you never adjust them again.
These guys have tried every permutation especially Mat Smith as I know he has the kit and been racing Tvr in the recent past.
Trust them is my view.
If you want the car softer / more comfortable look to do something with the tyre choice.
Tyres like Rainsport and others often offer the same tyre but with different load ratings.
Some tyres take upto 650 kg’s per corner so look at there specs,I have RS3 at 545 or there about’s which means they are more compliant over bumps resulting in a far better ride.
The days of thrashing about are over for me so this suits the set up I desire.

Hope that helps.

Thanks all. will try and obtain the standard ride height first and go from there, don't really want to be messing up the geo. On another note the protech shocks are really well put together and feel quality, good value for money I would say, if they work as good as they look and feel and be a happy man.

Tricky to get right crawling around on the garage floor.
I'd get it somewhere near and hand it over to a pro to get it all set up properly as above.
