Tyres - once more for the road!

Hi all, having searched the threads I am more confused than before so: please keep the answers simple!! :)

I have Front: 205/55ZR15 SO2's
Rear: 225/55ZR16 SO2's

The only problem is one of the front tyres has a 1 1/2 inch cut in the side wall about 2mm deep.

Should I replace it?

Do I need to replace both front tyres (they are only 5000 miles old)?

Are SO2's available?

Should I replace the rears as well?

If not SO2's then what?

SO2 in 205/55/15 no longer available!!! some dealer might have a couple but doubtful,ask around, would change front tyre immediately-- your life must be worth more than £200.00.Try mytyre. co.uk for alternatives there are some good one's around.

i was recently in the same situation as yourself, having 4 tyres all with good tread left but a small split in one of the sidewalls.
annoying as it was to replace them (i changed all 4 as they were rubbish anyway), it was for the best - it's just not worth the risk. i got 4 Toyo Proxies for £350, (inc fitting)

What were the rubbish tyres you replaced?

I'm thinking of putting F1 D2's on the front and the D3's on the rear when i need to.

Any thoughts - the toyo's don't look too good and the performance seems to be about the same?

I originally had Avon ZZ1's, didn't realise just how bad they were until I bought the Toyo's.
I don't know enough to comment about any other tyres

Not an easy subject this tyre business!

Now thinking of putting the Toyo T1-S all round whilst I can still get them. I want the W rated. Seems to make sense - comments!?

If you want reasonable grip wet, good dry grip and dont intend driving like a track refugee everytime you go out, check out the new Matrac tyres from Marshall. Just fitted 215/40/17s front, 225/45/17 rears and only paid 240.00 inc vat.( Trade price though!!)Not 100% they do the sizes you need but worth a look. Similar tread patern to Goodyear Eagle F1`s.

I had to replace mine, bit of a bugger cos they were perfect - apart from a razor blade got stuck into one.

Now running on Dunlops as recommended by John Reid at the factory.

Still running mine in but seem grippy enough.

There are two varieties, SO2 and SO2pp. If you happen to find one make sure it's the same type. These versions differ in both actual dimensions and compound and IMO should not be mixed on one axle.

I need some rears of mine (225/50-16) I was going to put GSD3`s on as you can`t find any S02`s or S03`s anymore. I`ve heard these are ment to be good.

Would I need different tyre pressures to that stated in the hand book if I put goodyears on?

Sorry for hijacking the thread but its a very confusing subject this tyre business.

Goodyear GDS3s are brilliant, the S03s seem to be OK in the dry but are useless in the wet IMO. I changed from Pzeros on my old car to the goodyears and the extra dry and wet grip was amazing. If I could to I would change all four right now.

You can only get GSD3`s for the rear.
You have to put GSD2`s on the front. which is a shame.

Dunlop - SP SPORT 9000 225/45 R17 ZR

Anyone know of these? Quite cheap too from Mytyres.co.uk (approx £90 - inc vat and del, minus fitting)

This has really been doing my head in!

Have now just spoken to the horses mouth in Blackpool and this is the form:

96 Chim 4.0 with power stearing
either:
205/55/15 Front 225/50/16 Rear
OR!
225/50/15 Front 245/45/16 Rear

Also they said that Toyo are the only real option at the moment as they are the only manufacturer to give us the same tyre all around the car with a Z rating.

I've ordered the later set in toyo t1-s.
