Whining from Nearside Rear?????

Hi all,

My car has devolped a whine from nearside rear. Doesn't sound to loud when cold but as the car travels further the whine gets more pronounced. Car is a 2000W and has covered 28k.

Have spoken to a couple of people who said it could be a wheel bearing.

Can anyone confirm the symtems or have any other ideas.

If it is a whell bearing what car is it from??

It sounds like bearing to me. I've changed these before, not a simple job, as the Bible will tell you. The torque setting is very high and you need to make sure you're not torquing up against the drive train. There is an ingenious method for this in the Bible.

Don't trust it to a back street garage; they'll bugger your diff or worse.

Agree - sounds like a bearing. Sourced from a Ford Sierra I think. You have to hand it to TVR for sourcing such high quality parts.

Change both if not all rather than just the one whining. Not a huge cost & if one's on its way out, the others will probably follow shortly.

I had this problem recently. The noise was magnified by the rollbar and became very loud the further I drove, but was relatively quite at the beginning of a journey. Turned out that the rear diff was shot and with a new diff the noise went completely. Hopefully it's just a bearing!

Bloody hell, 30k and the bearing is going? Sure you haven't driven it sideways into a kerb?

Changed my OS rear at 24k and then again at 36k. Mind you on further investigation we found a machining fault on the hub that caused the bearings to loosen off with heavy cornering. Replaced the hub so things should be better now.
