basic oil change query

When changing the oil I have heard that the pump can empty leading to zero pressure on start up. Is this right, or does it only happen if you leave it to drain over an extended period?
I intend to drain the old oil, fit a new filter & refil so I doubt if the sump will be be empty for more than ten minutes.
Any help will be appreciated.

Covered in reasonable detail in the bible.
I've not had a problem changing the oil on mine, but I've always taken care to have the new oil filter ready, filled with fresh oil, and put the new filter on as soon as the old filter comes off.
Bottom line, I guess, is to do the job without interruption and keep a careful eye on the oil pressure when you fire the engine afterwards - if the oil pressure doesn't come up within a couple of seconds, switch off immediately and prime the pump.

My advice would be to:
1. Fill the new oil filter with fresh oil.
2. Remove the old oil filter and quickly fit the new one.
3. Drain the sump.
4. Refill straight after.
5. Turn the engine on the started with fuel pump relay out and low tension coil connections off. Make sure the oil light goes out, indicating pressure.
6. Refit fuel relay + coil connections.
7. Check oil level and topup as necessary.
8. Start it and make sure you have decent oil pressure after a few seconds.
