Cooling Fans Stopped Working

Hope you can help.

Both my cooling fans have stopped working.

Checked the fuses, all seem fine. The fact that neither are going would indicate that this is correct, as they run off seperate fuses. The horn is still working as well.

Cleaned the terminal blocks under the Rad. Again, thers one for each fan, so I dont think that this is the culprit.

Now the stupid bit. I cant test, because I dont know where the otter switch is to short across it. I really should buy a bible (anyone got one for sale?) :o

By the way, it had a new cooling fan switch two weeks ago, so maybe its duff.

Any other possibilities?

There are two tanks attached to the cooling system, one is a swirl tank and the other an expansion tank with a (normally blue) cap on its top.
Follow the tubing to the swirl tank (probably on the left bank of cylinders from the driver's seat)and at the bottom of it should be the otter switch screwed in, with wires coming off the switch.
The connection may well have just come loose, but if not you can try shorting the connections with a paper clip which should result in the fans coming on with the ignition regardless of temperature.
If that works, the otter switch is probably bu**ered. If not you've reached the end of my admittedly limited knowledge and I hope someone else on here can help you further.

Otter switch is probably top-near-side of the radiator. Easy to see and get to (no digging required).

The majority of cars have them on the swirl pot. Even easier to get to.

Yep, found it at the bottom of the swirl tank. Took the leads off and shorted them, the fans kicked in fine. Surely it must be a duff switch.

Interesting, as I had a brand new one fitted two weeks ago which kicks in at about 75, as opposed to the old one which was nearer 90!

I was a bit surprised at Steve's remark, but he's not someone I'm prepared to take on where knowledge of the cars is concerned.

Yep,

Mines at the bottom of the swirl pot (98 car).

Checked and cleaned the terminals connnected to the switch, gave it a wiggle, and now all is well!
