Handbrake adjustment

My Handbrake is awful, it doesn't matter if I put my foot on the brake or not. In fact I can only get it to just about work by standing on the brake whilst hauling the handbrake lever up with both hands whilst trying not to put my back out! This is not good for quick getaways at traffic lights as evryone has gone by the time I struggle to get it off! The car is due an MOT next month so I need to sort it. Any ideas?

The handbrake just needs to be adjusted, as I have had the same problem.
I'm taking Trev down to my local specialist to adjust it for me 'while I wait' later today so will let you know how I get on. (Fingers crossed)

Hiya, just to report back, had the handbrake adjusted yesterday - car up on the ramp, 2 minute job, all sorted! Works great!

Thanks Cerby4.5, I have checked & lubricated the cables etc & adjusted but it is still the same. I am going to check that the rear callipers are not seized in the next couple of days so I will report back again.

I checked cables and calipers for seizure and all were ok. The problem was at the handbrake lever end. There is a small 6mm bolt on the ratchet assy which had come loose. A nasty job to get at as you have to take the transmission tunnel cover and top fibreglass assembly off but I tightened the bolt and all seems much better. It's just going to take ages to put it all back together now.
