Road Tax 2025

I know that road tax is set to change from 2025 so that EV cars start paying a share.
However, there are lots of stories on the internet regarding older car tax, does anyone know what the tax for a Chimaera is “actually” going to be for 2025 and if it is going up from what date?

If it's Heir Starmer in charge of bringing the wef rules it will be around £11,000,000 a year for each car.

The rates increase from 01/04/25. The rate for cars registered before 01/03/01 with an engine size over 1549CC (just over a 1.5 in plain English) which a Chim clearly is, will be £345 for 12 months.

It’s £345, or £362.50 if you pay by monthly direct debit.

I know this because I received my direct debit renewal email from the DVLA last week.

It usually goes up by RPI, which is why it went up 10% a couple of years ago. My guess is up £10 to £355. I usually buy it in Feb or March.

OT but an eye opener. If you buy a new car in France producing more than 193g CO2 it will cost you an extra £50,000 (60,000 euros) in tax.
Coming to a country nearer you soon perhaps..
So hang on to the old TVR.

That's the current rates. He's asking what they might be from April 2025 onwards. I'm guessing £365-£385, but with no basis for that guess!

It's still daylight robbery, 😒 our cars weight nearly a third of all electric offerings so less road damage, the large engine's don't help mind 😉

Scrap it and put more tax on petrol and electric charging.... mine spend most of their time in my garage .... the more petrol you use, the more you pollute ... sat in the garage they have nil effect on the climate .

That’s one of the reasons I was asking. If there was going to be a substantial increase it could have been more cost effective not to SORN the car dependent upon how much an increase and when. Seems like the general view is a modest increase so probably going to SORN

Yes , i like to give'em a run every two weeks , splash some oil around and burn some V-Power ... snow tyres on the Chim and Beemer for winter, Tuscan only on dry days without salt on the roads .
I only SORN'ed the Tuscan once , and it isn't a great saving ( nil on insurance) ... and better to keep them used be it only 10/15 miles a fortnight.

If you only SORN it for one month, that's a twelfth of a year (8.33%) you'll have saved. I took my TVR off the road on 30th Nov. But it's been relatively mild with not much rock salt going down round here, I'm considering taxing it on 1st Jan. I never use a d/d, it seems strange that they charge you a 5% premium to do that. If you buy 12m up front and the SORN it, they have the admin cost of posting out a cheque.

The increases are ALWAY from 1st April, the exact rates publicised in March. Quite a bit of misinformation out there about VED on EVs. Yes, they are retrospectively putting them all into Band B (and that's for ALL Band A cars) but the 'luxury' £40k plus tax is only on new cars registered after 1/4/25.

I keep my tax (VED) due in March each year , and my MOTs due in April , thereby avoiding any increase until the following year .
Funny everyone still calls it Road Tax , although Winston Churchill abolished it in 1937 .

Pity the DVLA isn't as dumb as the ULEZ , then I'd get away with £140 VED on my Tuscan

We've got 3 toy cars so pay by dd and sorn them for the months that we don't use them otherwise we're just throwing money away, it only takes a couple minutes to do it each time.

Going up to £360. However, it appears the 40 year exemption will roll forward, I expect that will stop soon.

That must be a very late one as I thought it was MK2 '85 onwards. I can't remember ever seeing a MK1 with a plate later than "A".
