Headlight Trim Removal

Following my front end respray I wasn't 100% happy with the alignment of the passenger side headlight trim, so when the indicator fell in the body on Saturday (just the icing on the cake of the worst 3 weeks of my life) I needed to take the grill out anyway so had a bash at the trim while I was at it, I found out why it wasn't sitting right so had a go at getting it off, I've undone the 2 bolts that fix to the bottom face of the panel (one of which is no longer attached to the trim :rolleyes:) but it appears to be fixed at the top (12 o'clock looking at the headlight) is there a bolt or some sort of clip up there, I didn't want to pull it too hard as with my current luck the trim would shatter the headlight fall into the body, smash, I'd drop a spanner on the newly painted bonnet, then reverse over the smashed headlight glass and get a puncture :(

Did my trims at the weekend, theyre 'just' bonded in at the top with two lumps of mastic or similar. The headlight lenses are then bonded in, again with mastic.

If you undo both the nuts holding the cowl in, then i used one of them craft knives with the snap off blades. The blades extend out about 3 inches and are really flexible. The top two thirds of mine were bonded in and by pushing the blade through and using a sawing action you can cut the adhesvie and then pull the trims off.... Just take your time, not too bad to do.... Took me about 2.5 hours to do both sides including removing lenses and cleaning reflectors..Steve.

The top of the cowel is stuck down with either mastic / silicone sealant. Trying to re-stick the top down once the whole assembly has been removed is a pain in the ar*e. One tip that has worked for me is to use enough silicone in sticking down the top so that you don't actually have to remove the whole unit again should you need to replace say the glass lens. I can now unscrew the 2 bolts at the bottom and manipulate the cowel off by stretching the silicone without actually fully removing the whole thing.

Thats it! their glued down, dont be too brutal with the screwdriver trying to prize them off though

Are you all sure that they're ALL like this? I'm sure mine are 'hooked' in at the top. There's no sign of mastic at all around mine. But I can't speak from experience as I haven't needed to remove mine yet.
