clunking noise from gearbox

I have recently noticed a clunking noise coming from the gearbox area when I lift off the accelerator. It is more pronounced when you lift off quickly and can be made to disappear when you lift off gradually.

Is this normal or something to worry about?

Did you check the engine mountings? Had this problem on a previous car and found that one of the mounts wasn't even bolted. The power train was twisting as the thottle was applied and released causing it to move up and down on the mounting.

There's probably a bunch of other things that others will suggest. Hope it's an easy/inexpensive fix anyway.

Had a similar problem, a clunk when taking foot off the accelerator. My problem was the diff mounting bushes.
