High beam turning itself on

The switch on the steering column for high-beam/dipped headlights seems to be on the way out. The headlights start to flicker onto high-beam by themselves every now and them. Pulling the indicator stalk back gently cures it temporarily.

I believe the electrical gubbins attached to the steering column is from early to mid 1990s cavalier/calibra. Can anyone confirm?

Also, is the headlight/indicator switch a self-contained part that can easily be replaced, or is it a molded plastic nightmare?

Yep, its off a Carlton. Any scrappie should be able to source you one.

It's off a Mk III Cavalier (1988-1995) or a Calibra (1990 onwards). The Carlton switch is slightly different.

Ahh right. Its just I had a Carlton, and the operation is identical. Different/incompatible switch then?

I'm not sure! It's a slightly different shape and slightly bigger, but if they had any sense they'd have made the electrical connector amd the mechanical bits the same. If they did and you'd fitted a Leven kit, once you'd been at it with the hacksaw they would probably be the same!

Got one from a breakers out of a Calibra on Saturday and all is now well. 5 minute job ... all moulded plastic, but it's quite nicely put together ... i.e. it doesn't fall apart, but you can dismantle it without loosing all your skin.
