Driving home last night, headlights gave up. Not completely - sidelights and full beam work, but not dipped. Most of the time there were no other cars around so I drove the last 5 miles on main beam.

Thought it would most likely be the fuse so spent a happy half hour in the rain with a torch in one hand and the other grovelling in the passenger footwell (if there's one thing that makes me think of changing cars it's the electrics ...). Swapped around the fuses for dipped and main beam, started the car - no difference, so it's not the fuse.

I suspect the relay has gone u/s but any other suggestions would be welcome. I'm using the wife's Supra today but it would be nice to be back in the Chimaera for the weekend...

You could swap the main and dip relay over to check if it is the relay. Also the relay socket sometimes gives a few problems.

This may be helpful to others in future ... swapped the relays, no change. Luckily, it was just that both bulbs had gone at the same time (one failing probably caused a voltage surge that took the other one out). All OK now.
