Cured air leak I didn't know I had!
Discussion
First of all a huge thank you to Frank Wilson without whose generous gift of his time and expertise I doubt I would have got to the bottom of the stalling issue with my car and get it running better then it has for a year or more.
Last year my car had starting issues which resulted in me changing, amongst other things, the throttle position sensor (TPS).
Anyway, thought I'd solved all issues until when I moved house from Cardiff to Rutland at the end of last year at which time, when I drove the car to it's new home, it stalled at every junction.
Fast forward to a week ago when, having agreed to a trip to the Netherlands in April, I thought I'd best try and get the Tiv sorted.
I knew the thermostat was sticking as the car was occasionally running cold (driving it back from Cardiff in November the temp gauge never moved from the bottom. No heating either so it was bloody freezing. So, I changed the thermostat, did the temp sender upgrade while I was at it and cleaned the stepper motor.
On refitting the stepper motor the thread shared off with zero force on it.
I ordered a new stepper motor from British Parts (not Britpart) and fitted it. still not behaving.
I contacted Frank, who had helped me before. After some remote data logging and analysis Frank suggested I take my car along to his workshop so we could replace some parts from his stock of known good ones or even swap with parts from his own car if necessary (he really is amazing!).
The first thing we discovered using Rovergauge was the new stepper motor wasn't operating as it should so got substituted with a known good one and tested.
Then Frank said the behaviour suggested there was an air leak so he got out his brand new smoke generator. This is where we both were dumbfounded. There was smoke coming out of the dipstick tube showing the car was drawing air via the tube and crankcase breather. Once we solved that (small O ring on the dipstick) it behaved much better. So, if you have rough running, make sure that your dipstick is pushed fully home and is sealing on the top of the tube.
The other discovery was that the hall effect TPS that I fitted last year wasn't working. Turned out the pins inside the plug I'd added had been pushed back when the plug was pushed together so were not making contact.
After resolving the above the drive home was brilliant. An hour back along country roads in the setting spring sunshine

So once again, a huge thank you to Frank and I hope this helps someone to resolve their own rough running/stalling issues.
