I'm having staring issues (from cold and hot) with my 1999 Chim 500. Sometimes it works fine but the starter sounds quite slow, other times it just clicks and then works on the next attempt, yesterday it clicked three times before it started but then later when hot it started fine (I had already parked facing downhill just in case a jump start was needed!). I've checked the battery voltage and terminals (all ok) so my next course of action is to check the main earth from the battery to the chassis and from the chassis to the engine. Where are these points and how do I access them? Thanks in advance for your help

earths are in the following locations:-
  • drivers wheel arch in the out rigger cross tube to chassis
  • drivers side front chassis leg end by the radiator bottom outlet
  • both sides of gearbox tunnel (accessed from inside car) near where dash crosses the tunnel
  • rear chassis end behind fuel tank
  • rear of engine passenger side onto the head

The main battery to chassis one connects to the transmission tunnel top on the passenger side, bit of a pig to get to.
This may have worked loose but you need to check it anyway as it can give other problems.
Chassis to engine in the passenger side wheel arch worth checking too due to its location.
A temporary jump lead from battery negative to engine will help you see if it's the ground, it's not unusual for it to be on the positive line.
