I noticed that the cats in my Y piece were missing, (presumably you can see them by peering inside?) but they are intact in the manifolds. Are the ones in the Y piece just secondary cats? therefore MOT friendly? Personally I don't like the sound, I much prefer the standard lovely drone, not too loud so they have to go back... The question is, there is a second hand Y piece on Ebay complete with cats for £170 or offer in almost perfect condition, is that a better option than finding and fitting cats to my Y piece?? cheers
It’s the other way round. The cat in your y piece will get it through an mot where as the smaller cats in each manifold can be removed but in truth it doesn’t add power that you’d notice.and is mainly a way to reduce under bonet heat.
If your Y piece has no cat you will be experiencing a very loud droning and the exhaust level will be at least 94-98 decibels which is enough to damage hearing after awhile and definitely would not pass an mot.
Just because you can’t see the cat doesn’t mean it’s not there.
To remove the main cat from y piece it will have to be cut open so if yours is de catted I’d expect to see a weld line which is obviously not standard on the y piece body.
If no dodgy looking weld line then the cat will still be in place.

Oh right, I thought you could see them by peering down the end, but you, there appears to be no dodgy welding that I can see. kery is usually done from above part of the silencer you wont see any welding etc whilst its fitted to the car IME its usually detectable by ear stock sounds good sleeved sounds w@nk
