Lost fifth gear

Strange thing happened to me today.

Driving along the motorway in fifth and I wasn't hanging about. All of a sudden, a loud pop. The rain water from the bonnet splashed the windscreen..... and ..... I lost fifth gear.
Of course I pulled over, looked under the bonnet but could not see anything amiss. All the other gears are fine. No strange sounds. When I put it in fifth, it just revs as if it was in neutral.

Any ideas anybody?

It's not that strange. The fifth gear was an addition to the box and the linkage is separate so can fail independently to the rest. I don't know how to fix it; I just know it is a known fault.

i had this happen to me, whatever you do, don't carry on driving it as it will damage the gearbox further. towerview in london, fixed mine and had the gear set uprated too as 5th gear is a known weak point.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost you?

well, i had a warranty on the car and they paid for about 75%. i think the total was about £1500. it was about 3 years ago though, so not too sure of amount.
