Broke down saturday night, dim battery light on then pop pop, dead. Knew was a flat battery and phoned AA. When he arrived, told him I suspected it could be a 100A fuse, under the car.
He couldnt find it and declared my alternator was faulty, so took me home.
Jacked it up today, found the fuse holder, popped it open and presto, it was breaking up and the arcing had virtually burnt it away in the middle.
Got a free one from mechy down the road, stuck it in, and job done.
Drove for a few miles, charge light stayed off so I'm assuming their isnt a real problem which has blown the new fuse.
Just wanted to tell someone, as because the charge light was on pre breakdown I was unsure the fuse would be to blame, but on seeing the way they fail, it makes no difference.
Excellent!

I had a look for this fuse and have not been able to find it anywhere on the underside of my car...looked from the starter motor back to the battery and there was definately no fuse!!! any ideas where else it might be, just for future reference???
Andy can't find mine either, mine is a 93, going to try and track it down 2morrow will let u know how I get on.

Mine was luckily quite easy to find.
I jacked up the front drivers side end and put an axle stand there.
Stuck me head in from the front and found the starter motor, drivers side of the engine.
Traced the thick cable from it that should be going to the front of the car.
It went into a small plastic box, which houses the fuse.
opened it up, job done.
Its not on the chassis as some of said (at least mines not), but above the rail, looks like its screwed to the floor.
Good luck.

Earlier in the summer, I had terrible problems with battery drain. Each time though, the fuse was intact but I was continually getting only 11 or so amps going back to the battery (instead of 13-14). The problem was finally traced to the battery lead itself- which had worn away on the alternator side of the 100 amp fuse box. (Mine was next to the starter motor).
When we replaced that piece of cable, we put in a longer part so that the amp box is now attached to the chassis strut behind the hub of the offside front wheel.
If or when that fuse blows again, I no longer have to go under the car- just remove the wheel and there it is. Also, as it's now sited higher, it's less prone to getting damaged by stones or water.
