chim for 4 grand!

hello,just had a look on ebay and noticed a chim up for sale from 4 grand with no reserve.....i dont know what it will eventually sell for but will be interesting.its a 93,4.3,red,split rim alloys,100000 miles,its a trade in,obviously not a1 but might sell for 5 or 6 grand or under!!!not bad if your short of cash or want a bargain.also saw a cerbera, 98 i think,only at 8 grand(no reserve) so far and only about 1 day left so i will be interested to see what that goes for.

I bow to your greater experience , I have only been speaking to the chaps that originally put these engines together, with no motive other than
"which engine would you go for given the choice?" and the reply "a 4.3 it's a nice free revving engine that spins up nice and easy", the other quote "I have lost count of the number of 500's that have been rebuilt, but can count on one hand the number of 4.3's we hve HAD to to"
Yes I know the fact that there are not many 4.3's out there in comparison to 500's etc, so that would support an alternative point of view.
And I don't think that you should pay over the top for one either, it is obvious, take each car on its merits and make your own mind up.

1) A quick look at the PH classifieds shows there's no significant premium for the 4.3s in the asking price (something that has always left me wondering - all else being equal, why would you not go for the quicker car?)
2) I've heard similar comments about the 4.3 vs 5.0 from various sources. Personally, for use in a lightweight sports car I think the 5.0 with its longer stroke, being less eager rev with more emphasis on stump pulling low down torque, is a somewhat compromised engine, and indeed it seems to be less reliable, stretching the venerable RV8 near its limits (oh, I'm sure a 5.3 from V8 developments et al is just fine, but those haven't been built to a price).
3) I seem to remember very similar if not equal performance figures from 4.3 and 5.0 engines in various road tests. Gearing will certainly have something to do with it, but frankly you'd have to have a deathwish to try the (alleged) 167 mph top speed of a five litre Griffmaera.
4) A healthy 4.0 surely should make something inbetween 210-225 bhp?

why are you such a doom-monger these days?
a 4.3 chim *is* rarer than a 4 litre, is also faster if in good condition .. why shouldn't that mean it's worth more? even if just slightly more? you don't half talk some crap sometimes

.......my 4.3 is an excellent car and revs very well. To quote Mark Adams, "its a screamer".
Its actually for sale. Why not add another few grand to the outlay on the dodgy one (allegedly) on eBay and have a nice car with FSH.
Jellison is correct with his 225bhp estimate (mine is 230ish) but I think the TVR figure was 280bhp and if everything is relative that is not so far behind the 4.5 and 5 litre (for a lot less cash). The 4.0HC was 275bhp.

Jelli is obviously talking bollox here - he's probably never driven one. Trackcar's comments make sense. The actual numbers are not relevant (OK I mis-quoted from memory) it's the difference I was implying as meaningful. For the 4.3 +300cc = +40 bhp and for the 4.5 +500cc = +45 bhp. That's because the 4.5 is taken as is from LR without reworking heads and badged TVR (sort of). The 5.0L is a different story......
But I think the bottom line really is rarity but for a car now over 10yrs old it's not going to make that much difference in price - but should help it sell. Having said that I wouldn't let mine go for usual 4.0L money!
I only started the post to say how cheap it is ,not engine size ,power etc,just in case anyone was interested in cheap moted,private plated chim!!the cerb sold for just over 11 grand which was a bargain for a 98,it was well looked after and had a lot of money spent.!!

Sorry guys! (me being humble here!) - 4.3 obviously better than a 4.0 and presume for the age (as 4.5 not around then) would be the better buy (much better presumable if it can make similar or better numbers to the 4.5).
Will make a better noise than later cat 4.0 and 4.5 as it will presumably be pre-cat.

Go for it, if a good car chassis wise - this is as important if not alot more some than the engine.
