Can anyone help. My windscreen wipers have packed up.

Well, not completely, they still work on the fastest setting, then maybe very slowly on the normal setting. But unless I start the fastest setting first, I get nothing. A couple of weeks ago they were fine, just all of a sudden they've pretty much stopped.

What can I check (or get my nearest garage to check), and is this kind of thing usually covered by your warrenty, as its something thats actually failed??

Cheers

Hi James,
If you still have warranty running? Then I would expect this type of problem to be fixed under it.
Wear and tear is not normally covered. Things that drop off or fail to work properly, I would expect to be repaired under warranty. Fit for purpose.
Hope the rain holds of until the repair.

The parking sensor and power connection to the underside of the wiper motor are very suceptable(sp) to water ingress. First approach would be to try a hefty dose of WD40 all around and iside this plug. This sorted mine out when they went on the blink.

This old chestnut. I had the joy of this happening to me on the M25 during a downpour of epic proportions. Into next services, unbolted mechanism, reseated contacts and sprayed liberally with WD40 - and they jumped into action again. Unfortunately I was carrying 10 lbs of rain soaked into my clothes and suffering severe hypothermia by the time I'd finished!

Just as an aside, i always keep the old Rainex applied to my screen cos i don't trust the wipers, don't even need to use them above 50mph or so, plus my wipers are pretty poor at the higher speeds anyway

Silly question I know but have you tried just tightening the retaining nuts?

Cheers guys,

I will check the retaining nuts and try a dose of WD40 at the weekend. Hopefully that will sort it.

OK, the retaining nuts are fine, squirted a load of WD40 in there and everything worked fine...for a few minutes...then back to normal, wipers only work on full speed, then maybe on the other speed for a bit before slowing and stopping.

Anyone have any more suggestions?

Someone at work suggested checking the connections but I don't see any, not that I really knew what I was looking for anyway.

The parking and first speed wipers on mine went funny too - turned out to be the relay in the footwell where the fuses are - it just "dropped out" and therefore didnt trigger the currents to the motor correctly. A small piece of insulation tape sorted that one out...

This might not help at all, but a fiend of mine who has a TR7 peered into my engine bay and took great delight in exclaiming that the wiper motor was identical to his, i.e. a bog standard Lucas one. Working along these lines any competent auto sparky should be able to sort fairly cheaply.

Just a guess, but could the brushes be worn?? I believe this makes things run slow

I had a similar problem on my Griff which eventually lead to the wiper motor packing up. It's a doddle to replace on the Griff (I had a lesson from the dealer), can't see as it would be any different on the Chim.

Mine was under warranty so I don't know how much the motor would be but you could save on some labour...

Cheers

Depends as on some of the latewr Chiumaera it is located on the inside of the car to stoip the water ingress problem. They have also changed the motor design as well.
