New to TVR's - any links to the history of Chims???
Discussion
G'day,
New to TVR's, but not to the Rover V8 motors, and wish to find out more about Chims - prob been answered all before, but here goes:
What year did the Chim start to appear?
What year are the "updates" that every advertiser seems to claim?
The Rover V8 motor - are the early Chims a 3.9 rebadged or are they a 4.0 (cross bolted mains)?
What gearbox(s) have been used and what large production vehicles did they come out of etc?
THX in advance

The engines can be something of an enigma. Ive just had a full strip and rebuild of my engine, and it appears to be a 3.9l engine, with the smaller crank journals etc, but fitted with a serpentine front case and the block has the bosses cast in for cross bolting.
To my mind this means its a custom crank (anyone want to confirm this) as the 3.9 engines have too short a crank nose for a serpentine timing cover. This didn't hamper the rebuild other than cause some head scratching trying to figure out exactly which components to order. As always check check and check again because nothing is as it seems!

Aha - this was what Land Rover called the intermediate timing cover on the 3.9 - serp belt but still have dissy driven oil pump.

Yes and no, its a crank driven oilpump still with a dizzy, and there are two types of the cover too, ERR3434 and ERR6814 if memory serves, the difference being the casting on the back of the oil pump, dont know if they are interchangeable and cant afford to try and see!

Hi mate live in Brisbane and the owner of a 5.0l Chimera happy to talk off line email me directly, you can se a pic of the car at my profile
G'day Stuart,
I've sent you a PM, if you dont get it email me on TVRS3c@hotmail.com - this is an old address.
Do you know of any other Chim owners in Aus - especially Sydney? I met a few TVR owners via PH last year, but lost contact with them all - one guy had 2 Griffs, another with Cerb, another Griff which I see in the workshop in North Sydney too often and an old S2.

I'd be very interested in how you get on with this, i'm looking at exporting mine when i emmigrate in June but i was coming up with some issues because a recall has been issued for all Chimaeras in Australia and compliance has apparently been removed.
Not quite sure what the current state of play is or how this is effecting imports.
Cheers

Where is yours built? have you owned it longer than 1 year?
If its a UK built one and you have had it for a while then no real issues.
I have seen some Malaysian built ones refused compliancing in NSW which were transfered from QLD.

You would not believe it, I saw one of my regualar Griffs today at its usual workshop in North Sydney.
Are TVR's that unreliable??? Pls understand I an a Land Rover enthusiast also so I have lots of tolerence for unreliability.
LRH
If you look after them they'll look after you, as the old cliche goes. On the face of it, they're mostly based on proprietary parts, if you can look after Landies you can look after a Chimaera.
Regular fluid changes, gentle right foot until warm etc and you wont have a problem. The major problem with Chimaera's this year seems to be chassis rot, which is more crap quality chassis coating more than anything!

Yup, mine's a UK built car and by the time we come to move i will have had it for over a year..
Any idea what the situation is like for Victoria? Same deal?
Cheers
Al
From what I have heard VIC is not too bad - have heard of cars passing egineering in VIC which are later refused transfering to NSW.
Why the move to VIC?
