Since it looks like the beast could be having some work done, what are the preferred options for a decat while i'm at it?

Pre-cat de-cat.

The main cat will get you through the MOT test fine, the pre-cats are not too useful.

What happened?

A leak in the coolant system (possibly the pump) drained all my coolant out, and as a result, the head gasket went. but it also needs manifold gaskets doing anyway (I knew about them )

Hope i have'nt warped the head.. or cracked the block!
