Four times now I've been driving along minding my own business and 'pop' the drivers door opens. Scares the sh1t out of me sometimes and if I'm resting my elbow on the door it has the tendency to cause the car to swerve. (yes I know I shouldn't put my elbow there). It's a '99 Chim. I've checked to see that the mechanical parts are secure and they are. I can only assume it must be electrical but where do I start? I locked the doors last time I drove it using the button on the centre door release. The door didn't open but that was only a short journey so I don't consider it evidence of anything yet.

Any ideas?

Happened to me with the passenger door. In my case it was just that the release cable was too tight. Open the cover too access the lock mechanism and you will see the cable. If you operate the release knob on the centre consol while looking at the cable you will see which one to adjust. I just backed it off a couple of turns & alls been fine since.

I had the same thing happen with mine but slacked off the cable at the other end (ie the knob in the centre consol) and all was well thereafter.

This is very odd though. Cables usually stretch over time. I shall have a look and report back.

I've lost a couple of passengers... well almost, but problem seems to have rectified itself. Worth noting though..

Water ingress on the under mirror button? Shorting it?
Got to be something on that chain if it is not tight cables

On cars with a mechanical door release in the boot, this can apparently be activated by stuff in the boot pressing on the cable.

Thanks folks. I was thinking along the lines of water in the mirror switch. I shall take a peek in the boot too. I had forgotten about that red handle.
