I've tried to search but it's not working at the moment. I have a set of Lexus style rear lights that I want to fit (not to every taste I know but I like the look of them). Before I do I want to de-bling them by painting the chrome. To do so means removing the clear cover. I'm sure there was a post on this subject ages ago & that there was a simple way of getting them off. Any one know what that was?

There was a post ages ago peet. I think this is the one you mean
www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=99160&f=8&h=0&hw=rear+lights

Unfortunately a lot of the piccies on the thread have been removed.

I think the guy who painted the lights you're on about was Pluckett. He hasn't posted on here in ages.

Cheers Sparky, that was the thread I was thinking of. Unfortunately the hair drier option didn't work. I dont want to have to destroy the clear section in order to remove it. Any advice any one?

ps
Still can't get Search to work! Why?

No, you don't remove the clear cover -STOP!!

The de-bling ex-plunkett is now mine. Open the boot, pull back cloth covers to lights. You should find they are screwed to body shell somehow (mine are) or perhaps they're bonded in hence your query?

Anyway, way in is from the inside mate.

Pics..... (thank you we don't need posts with puking smilies - we like 'em OK?)

You misunderstood Kieran. The Fiesta lights come with a bonded on clear cover which follows the line if the originals. This needs to be removed in order to paint the chrome black. I have cut the cover off with a Dremel & painted one of the lights but its a bit rough. From what you can see on yours has the orginal inner cover been left off or did he glue it back afterwards?
I know its a matter of personal taste but I think it looks much better with the new lights.

Been looking on ebay under Car tuning & styling / lights & lighting accessories / Ford. Found the lexus type light is available with the surround allready painted in black so no need to remove the clear covers.
katmotorsport.co.uk 07951 702876 Cost is £79.99 pr set + £10.99 postage Chrome lexus type lights are less at £59.99 pr set + £10.99 postage.
Interesting that the chrome ones are stated as being e marked & the black ones aren't! I have not used this supplier just thought it may be of use.
I may get myself a set to have a go with i think it would update the rear a bit without looking too max power.

Just got the black ones off ebay and not sure how messy this is going to be. If I understand things, I remove the outer cover from the new light units and throw it away.

The original lights can be removed from the inside of the boot. I DONT have to pull off the out smoked covers on the car, right?

Then some sort of bonding is required to mount the new ones throught the boot.

Is that right folks?

Sorry Pete, I didn't know they ever had their own covers as I didn't fit them. Mine are screwed into the shell with two screws each, just like the old Fiesta lights were. There is a bit of padding/gaffer on the edges, but once in, you can't tell from the outside - wouldn't worry about rough edges!

I've been thinking of doing this rear light upgrade myself, and have found some LED Lexus style lights for a MK 4 - MK 5 Fiesta. Are these the type I would need (MK 4 or MK 5 I mean)
Obviously I would de bling them, but these do come in a black colour too. BUT they are £149.00 on a buy it now - ouch!

Nope Mk3 Fiesta 89-95.

Poorpeet, let me know how you get on with the De-Bling. I want to do a set on the Cerb, but paint them navy blue to contrast the car.

John YHM.
Richard. Did you get my email about the Cerb? Anyway the lights look great (to me at least). I got mine for £30 from ebay so I put up with the slight hassle of painting the chrome. For a dark car I'd def go for the pre finished black ones. They will only take 10 min to fit.
For a light car like yours I'd suggest you try black & chrome & see what looks best. I would think that the best option would be to paint the chrome section in your cars colour.
At the end of the day, it's not an expensive change, you can always put the originals back & flog the others on ebay OR, Better still swap your Cerb for my Chim with the lights already fitted (I'll even throw in a full tank of fuel!)
Can't say fairer than that.
