Has anybody had a sump gasket fitted to stop an oil leak?
I have a 97 4.5 Chimaera that leaks oil only when stood in the garage.
Would getting a sump gasket fitted cure this?

Cheers
Andy

The sumps appear to be sealed with silicone only by TVR, and a right bloody mess it is generally too. There is a perfectly fine cork gasket widely available which is almost guaranteed to seal better, and has the added advantage of not shedding bits of silicone to block up your oilways.

It is not a TVR specific thing. The cork gaskets are pretty ropey and don't last long. Silicone applied in the right way is a do it once fix and doesn't rely on a perfect fitfrom the sump to seal.

Thanks for the advice. Is it an engine out job to take the sump off and then apply silicone?

I've had much better results using a proper cork sump gasket on the first two of my rv8 tivs.As long as you don't buy a cheap one there much better imho.I used a Payen brand one in both cases. When my oil change is due in June,i'll be fitting another to my current griff.

Not much of a job really, as long as you get the car reasonably high on axle stands. Clean off old, check pick up pipe and sump for debris, make sure both surfaces are clean and dry, don't be tempted to put too much sealant on as excess will find it's way into pick up pipe. Well, that's what I've done. [no leaks] Hope this helps.

Just a thought but I had my sump ghasket fixed twice before the problem was properly diagnosed as a pas fluid leak. Fresh jubilee clip sorted it. Check to see if the leaked oil is thin ish :/

The oil level is way below the joint when the engine is stationary, so why would it leak ?

It is only an hours work to replace, but check other areas first.
