My 97 Chimp 450's rev counter doesn't work when I start the engine. Then after about 5 seconds it pops into life.

1. Is this normal?

2. Why?

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Would have thought this is right down Steve Heath's street!

No! It doesn't sound normal. Normally (as in, I can only assume it's the same on the TVR - but don't quote me!!!) the rev counter should take a signal from the ignition system, so could be something like a loose connection.

I'm sure someone in the know will put me straight.

No it isn't. I am having enough problems as it is....

Could be an intermittent connection or a fault in the rev counter. Might be worth chceking wires and connections but I would leave well alone as repairing a rev counter is expensive especially if the counter works perfectly after the first 5 seconds.

It's not really broke so don't fix it.

when the rev couinter on my rangey started to play up it was a problem with the alternator, so maybe worth wipping that off and getting it checked at the local lucas place, once you've checked all the obviuos connectors...

Many moons ago I had a car that had a similar problem. It used to stick in the rest position when you started up until it leapt off the rest and then worked properly. I took it to bits and found it was touching behind the face of the dial. After a small amount of bending of bits it was perfect.

Thanks everyone for the sound advice.

I think I'll leave it be as it's reliable once it starts working. Could be sticking on the rest but I might bu99er it completely if I try bending things. If it dies completely I will think again.

Happy New year
