I need help from a V8 expert, my 350i has covered 97k miles.
The oil pressure drops to zero when revved, the oil light does not come on, it does no rattle, any suggestions before I remove and strip the engine
possibly a faulty sender or loose connection to it. I assume that the oil warning light works and lights when the ignition is on before starting?. I'd start with changing the sender unit, although I think there may be several to chose from, depending on the gauge. Easiest to remove the old one first. I was happily proceeding down the main straight at Bruntingthorpe at 145mph at the ASDA Charity Day last year, when I glanced down and happened to notice the oil pressure gauge; zero. Nada. Zilch. Rien. N-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-thing... No oil pressure light, no rattling, no misfiring, no hesitation, no indications of impending seizure, no oil pressure.
So, I let it cool down for half an hour and drove home very slowly and carefully, and the indicated pressure slowly crept back up to normal. I got my menders to change the sender, and it all seems to be fine now; indeed the oil pressure is better than it has ever been.
I conclude that the purpose of oil pressure gauges on TVRs is to fill an otherwise unattractive hole in the dashboard.
