Alternator connections
Discussion
Wonder if anyone can help me as I think I have been a bit of a muppet.
I removed my alternator when stripping down the engine for cam work and cleverly didn't label up the leads. When I re-assembled everything, it is clear where two of the cables (the large one to the 100 amp fuse and the cable in the middle with a retaining nut on it) go. This left me with a spade connector on the third terminal. I had one free female spade connector in the general area - white with a black/grey trace and I connected this to the alternator. As a comment, it looks very similar to the wires which come off the higher up loom spur on to the coil terminals.
Car fired up and ran fine but alternator light stayed on. As it was working immediately before stripping the engine I assumed i must have wired it up the wrong way. On further digging I have found an additional spur of the loom near the alternator with two wires - (i) black with purple trace and (ii) black) in it.
Does anyone have any idea which of these wires might be the correct one to connect to the third terminal? None fit with the colour coding in the bible or the range rover haynes manual. I connected the purple/black (as it looked like a connector might have pulled off it), which made the light go out even when the engine wasn't running, so I don't think its that one. I have cleaned up the 100a fuse connection.

Sorry, late reply- but my reply to a similar question on this thread may help:

Cheers -following your post it must me the white/black lucas connector and the other two wires are not needed.
I have cleaned up the 100 amp fuse terminals and bolted them together to bypass the fuse for now. Am I right in thinking that I ought to see 12+ volts between the large alternator terminal and the alternator body? I have checked the continuity across the 100 amp fuse terminals and its fine, however, at the alternator end, there is no voltage reading between the large terminal and the alternator body.
Is it possible that there's another fuse/connection which has gone, or could this be a bad earth?
