chaps

whilst we're on the subject - does anyone know of a model of rear pioneer speaker ?

currently have a speaker in each door and am considering adding two more where the air vents are on the parcel shelf

i know i've read something about this in the bible and have a feeling there is a 'lack of depth' issue to get round. any tips/advice ?

cheers

D

P.S. Will measure my front speakers for you lafr when i getr home tonight and advise

No lack of depth, you have the whole boot behind that bulkhead to play with. You will need to cut the bulkhead (I did mine when the car was about 3 months old, and it was a ooo-er moment when I took a saw to my shiny new car!). The boot trim which covers the rear of the bulkhead is just wedged in place, and easy to remove. If you move it back any distance you may need to trim the card behind it, as the body slopes down and narrows. Common practice to get clearance for the speakers is to glue a couple of bits of timber to the bulkhead for the trim to sit against, creating a bit of space. You end up with less of a ledge on the top of the tank.

For mine I replaced the card (actually fibreglass) with a similar shaped bit of MDF, a couple of the aformentioned timber battens, and the MDF now screws to the battens for more positive location. Battens are "no more glue"d to the bulkhead. I needed the extra stiffness to mount two amps and a 12 disc CD changer.

The other point to be aware of is that the bulkhead is curved, concave at the front, and your speakers may sit a little proud. Depending on the size and profile this should be hidden by the carpet. I fitted 7x10 Kenwoods and experimented with position first before doing any cutting just to get the best fit.

PS for anyone thinking glued on bits of timber batten are a bit of a rough and ready bodge, please don't ever remove your dashboard top.

Edited to add: oops, I see the "lack of depth" was in respect of the doors! Yes, thats absolutely true, the window glass in the down position is the limiting factor. If you could make up a wedge shaped spacer to angle the speaker up and back you'd get a little extra clearance and a huge improvement in sound. Ears are much better at hearing than knees! One of those jobs I've always meant to do but never got round to.

Thanks DB S3 i am not with my car a the moment so i can't check.

I am also thinking about putting in some rear speakers, initially I planned to fit some 6x9 but everyone seems to advise against it. What are you going to fit?

i currently have 16cm speakers in the doors - fit v snuggly in the non-leather curved area towards the front of the doors.

mr meldrew's post above v interesting to read too

as for the rear speakers, i'm gonna be going with something similar i reckon

don't take this the wrong way, but just slightly concerned 6x9's may look a little wide-boy !!!! seriously though, there are some funny angles going on with the vertical aspect of the parcel shelf round there and i'm thinking pureround speakers may be easier to fit ?

let me know how you get on

Interesting reading, about to tweak my Chim and sort out the rear speakers. Currently the car just has the factory fit extra rears which are frankly a bit pants. Interesting hearing people don't think much of 6x9s in the rear - my old Chim had them fitted and they not only sounded great but were a good fit - the pervious owner had them mounted a little proud of the shelf, and despite standing out against the biscuit carpet, they looked good.

Luckily my new Chim has Prussian blue carpets so hopefully you'll virtually not notice the speakers. I fully intend to go down the 6x9 route, just struggling to find an unobtrusive design that doesn't have chrome, neon lighting or a silly shape grille

I have also been thinking about 6x9 in the rear - got a super new head unit sounds pants with the factory fit rears. Something like the sony xplod's which look nice with the covers on something like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sony-XS-F693G-3

Having read a lot about fitting 6x9s to the rear it seems the best solution is to cut some short plastic pipe which fits between each screw hole and the bulkhead, making the speaker sit slightly proud but enuring a solid fit

Fronts are 16cm, Pioneer do some very good ones that fit nicely and the rear is up to you. I had 6x9's and they worked great!

The perfect set up.....

Just fitted some inifinity 5001i to the rear in the vent holes, they're 5.25" ones, originally going to put them in the front but put some focal components in instead

Fitted them slightly proud so the vents still do there job.

Took out an MDF panel that the previous owner had fitted with JBL 6x9s, saved a few pounds in weight and gained better sound
