Hi all,
whilst inspecting the radiator frontage for any blockages/damage, I noticed what I presume is the air intake filter - a long foam cylinder placed over the start of the air intake.
Mine is covered in an oily substance. Are they supposed to be like this (as some K&N types) or is this muck from the road et cetera. Hopefully not the latter, as the car was only serviced around 4 months ago.

The filter should be lightly coated with oil. This is supposed to trap dirt, so if it's been on a long time it can get pretty manky, but there shouldn't be oil literally dripping off it.
On some models the breather is taken out to the air filter, and if the engine blows a lot of oil out this ends up as gunk oozing out of the filter. This indicates a problem with the engine/breather system.
You can clean the filter by removing it and 'washing' it with white spirit (or similar), then go to your local motorbike shop and ask for a can of foam filter oil (1 litre should cost around £5) ...might be better to do this first (dohh!) and put about half a cupful in a polythene bag followed by the filter and squeeze the filter and the oil through the bag, then let it drain into a can for an hour or so ....(this is sounding like a recipe!).
Cleaning the filter does not appear to be part of a garage's service if my experience is anything to go by!

the dodger said: So, does anybody know how/if the foam filter should be serviced? I think it's location is prone to collecting road debris (and water!) and surely should be cleaned occasionally? Are there any airfilter upgrades available (K&N)?
Happy Xmas for tomorrow!
Hi Dodger,
Yes you can get a K&N for the Chimaera. I fitted one early this year, paid about £35 from Wedge in Sheffield. They are very reasonable and do lots of bits for most TVR's. They have a web site - links via PH.
Cheers
