Seems the diff on my '94 Chim is leaking oil on either side, and I'm advised that the bearings are crackered.

I'm advised to take the diff out and get it refurbished.

Does anyone have any experience of this and can give me any suggestions and costs ?

cheers

Mike

It's cheaper to get a secondhand one from

www.bellhillgarage.co.uk/

or

www.douglasvalley.co.uk/

thanks Bob

will give them a call on Monday.

slightly confused as to why buying a 'second hand' unit is better than getting the existing diff refurbished; is there a massive price difference ?

If I were you I would go for a recon, that way you get a known good diff.

thanks Peter

I was thinking along the lines that refurbishing a diff i already had would be cheaper than getting another one, unless of course it's a standard ?Ford? unit that would be cheaper to buy new than from a TVR breakers ?

as per my original post, I'd appreciate any advice from anyone who's been down this route before

If you do the removal and refitting yourself then a diff rebuild needn't be particularly expensive, give Competition Transmission a call.

If the bearings are goosed you'd have heard it whining .. can you hear any noises?

I used to replace lots of side seals though, you can do that with the diff still in the car, used to be routine and TVR actually supplied the dealers with a tool to do it .. go ask your local dealer first before splashing out on a diff that might not be needed ..

Pro's and con's

Referb, you know the seals, bearings bushes and spaces are in good order but it requires the car to be off the road for a few weeks

Second hand, taken from a sub 25k miles write-off, done in a day and guaranteed for a month so you have time to decide if it's OK but there's no guarantee there after.

Both options cost the same for the basic 'diff', a few hundred. If the LSD needs replacing then the referb option becomes very expensive, more than £1k.

TVR don't do a direct replacement part, they changed manufacturer in 2001 as I understand and they no longer offer earlier parts. Their option was costed at £1.2k when I asked 18 months ago and needs chassis welding to modify the hangers.

Fitting not included in these prices.

lots of whining going on; have been quoted 4 hrs labour plus about £250 for the bearings refurn; seems reasonable, but will investigate the cost of buying a second hand one.

thanks for all the advice

I used Competition Transmissions too. Bernie is a top bloke and won't tell you to have work done if you don't need it.
