Ok! so who's now bored with Christmas and wants to answer some techno queries on Boxing Day ??!!

My Chimp 400 went in to David Hendry Cars for a temp gauge repair recently (no reading) They carried out the repair and said it was now all working fine

It was then working fine till Christmas Eve when all of a sudden it starts reading 100+ and even crept up to sun temperature, but then it flicked and went back to 85! I stopped and smelt the engine (and my armpits), the fans weren't running and it wasn't running lumpy so (I spat on the floor) and drove home.

Checking the wiring I came across a lump in the wire between the sender and the gauge (on top of the engine) very nicely (not!) wrapped up in electrical tape.
On opening it, I found sixteen thousand resistors all soledered up together; this work had obviously been carried out by a one armed blind Mexican sheep shearer who had recently had his hand stamped on by a neurotic Camel! or my 11yr old had done it when I wasn't looking (if you want some great jpeg's simply mail me) tvr@thepriestmans.fsnet.co.uk

What has everybody got in the way of a resistance bridge, in-line with the sender to temp gauge circuit ?
Mine works out as Green,Brown,Black, Brown which I think i'm correct in saying is a value of 5.1 K ohms, only the read out on the multi-meter says 94.4K !?!

So either there's a large current on this circuit (I DON'T THINK SO!) or nobody had a decent wire wound that would do the job !? (oh, and a soldering iron that gets hot!)

I'm guessing to set the gauge up you need to run up to working temp and then take an infra-red from the engine - then adjust the resistance to get the gauge reading right

Of course it may be that the thermo has thrown an xmas wobbly - but one step at a time; lets get over this crazy bit of wiring that somebody has done - I can't believe it, this is the kind of thing that gets the marque a bad press

Come on then any red faces that owned S21TVR ?

rant,rant,rant,rant Happy Christmas xxxx

Ok so my last posting was a bit heated (by the engine!) sorry everybody !
but surely somebody out there knows what the impedance of the resistance bridge between the temp sender and the temp gauge is - Mr heath you must know this one ?

I want to drive my car but until i've got some info i'm loath to start the b****y thing! (and I know it's an old, old subject - but anybody reading the posts will at least gain some info from it!)

2898765434.7654 Ohms should do something....

The value is whatever the right one should be. There is so much variation out there that there is not necessaril;y one correct value. Use a variable and your IR gun to adjust the reading and then replace with the equivalent resistor.

PS and sometimes you have to solder 16 thousand resistors together to get the exact value...

thanks Steve for the info, I had kind of come to this conclusion myself, of course I was hoping for some kind of miracle cure (like "oh simply solder a baked bean can and fairy liquid bottle together, knit some sandals, whilst holding a grape between your knees") but that is just motoring life eh!

I still think whoever put the sixteen thousand resistors together should go on an intensive soldering course though! (they do a residential one in Tristan de Cunha)

Happy New Year
