Strange graunching sound coming from the join between the steering column and rack as I turn the steering wheel. It sounds almost rubber in origin. Could this be a bearing or more likely a seal of some sort. Anyone had any similar noises from that area..... having driven a car that the rack broke on it's not an experience I'd like to repeat at Chimaera speeds!!

Mine did this and got very stiff too (oo-er).

It was eventually traced to the universal joint in the steering column by a dealer. Not seen the UJ myself as I'm not a qualified mechaninc so I leave steering and brakes well alone!!

Dealer said the UJ can get splattered by crap from the front wheel if the plastic inner wings aren't a great fit.

Can't remember what it cost to fix but not cheap.

Err, it should be cheap... UJ plus an hour at most labour (assuming a similar setup to the S). DIY job too..

Cheers

True - BUT we have no local dealer here in Guernsey so had the extra cost of boat trip to Jersey. That's why I can't remember the exact amount - only that it wasn't cheap.

DIY - OK, but I never touch brakes or steering unless in an emergency. Should do really - have the bible on order so that will help !!!
