Hi all

I've been browsing this forum for quite a while now, but not really ever had
the need to post. However....

This morning, I tried to unlock my '93 4.0 Chim and the central locking decided that
it was going to unlock, followed by lock itself again promptly.

I have been having this problem ever since I bought it last year, normally it's a
case of just trying to unlock it again, and quickly pushing the door release button
before it locks again - problem solved.

This morning it decided not to unlock again, leaving me stranded outside my house,
and with the nearside indicator stuck on too (it seems to be doing this lots now).

Luckily for me, and strangely, the indicator went off on its own, and I was able to
unlock the car - but as things seem to be getting worse it is apparent that if
the locking does pack up completely I have no way of getting into my car - the most
embarrassing thing being that if the indicator stays on, it normally sets off the alarm!

So I post in desperation - if my central locking plays up, how do I get in my car without smashing a window?

Whilst I am posting, there is another strange happening too...

The alternator decided it was going to pack up last monday, and yes, the lights ARE the wrong way round on my car (the bottom one not being oil pressure!) - however, I
had the alternator re-wound and it is charging at about 14v, but, even with the engine running, just using the electric windows, fan, indicator or anything basically makes all interior (and main lights) dim badly. The other strange thing is that when stationery, when you use the heater fan it makes the speedo start reading about 50mph?!?!?!

I do apologise for all the questions, but thought I should kill all birds with one stone - your advice would be appreciated.

Thanking you all in advance (and for the help I have had from this site for the past year)

Chris

Not sure where you are in the UK, but Carl Baker (TVRUK) sorted out my '94 Chim; like you the indicators were sticking on, which if I recall correctly is something to do with the relays in the old Alarm system (Meta ?) installed as standard on the car.

I'm not going to post "how to break into your Chim" using the two techniques I've used, but I'm sure somebody (Big Al ?) will be along in a moment to assist.

Hi there

Thanks for the prompt reply! - I am based in Halstead, Essex which is Near Colchester, Chelmsford, Braintree etc

Whilst I am able to get into the car at the moment, I can see myself being stranded in the not too distant future!

I understand that "how to break into your Chim" is not really the kind of information that you (or I) want posted on a public forum!

I've got "The Bible" so if it is a sticking relay, then I may well be able to
do that myself (or replace it)

Hopefully Big Al will be along shortly

Chris

Are you a TVRCC member yet? (worth it just for Sprint mag!) Even if not, come down to mid-essex meet on Sunday and meet lots of fellow tivvers. When we see you in the flesh (rather than a couple of posts on a forum) we can see you haven't stolen the car and reveal all break in secrets

Pauline will no doubt persuade you to join up if not already done - but is the nicest RO you ever could meet. Very friendly bunch and a really lovely Sunday roast to boot.

Convoy from Chelmsford White Hart, and meet at Gt Totham (Foresters Golf Club).

Great day out and meet lotsa folks - see MID-ESSEX thread running on TVR general....

Hope to see you there!

Hi Kieran

Is it this Sunday? - I still have a problem with the Alternator (see original post), so I am a little worried that I might end up causing more problems. If I have it fixed by then, then I would love to come along

I'll take a look at the general discussion, sounds like it could be beneficial to me!

Is there any way that I can prove that the car is mine? obviously I have loads of photographs etc!

Hi Kieran

All things going well I think I will turn up. I intended to ages ago (when I first got it) but never got round to doing it

I think it would be good to meet up with fellow TVR drivers, can't say I've ever
been to a "meet" before so have no idea what to expect

What does it cost?

How much does it cost? - nothing if you have Green Flag, otherwise the tow truck charges by the mile! Sorry, er, no - meet is free. Sunday roast I think £8.99, or less for Huffers/MNX/other. I forget how much the beer is, but everything tastes good!

Sounds cool to me - although isn't it a Cerb meet? (obviously driving a Chim)

I'll be there for sure then, I just pray that I don't have the same problem tomorrow morning! (and that the alternator is fixed!)

Pauline likes to highlight a particular model now and then, so they all park in prime position - just a bit of fun. There will NOT be a shortage of Chimaeras there! It's the only time I feel positively common!!

Hi Chris, just going back to your original question.
I had quite a few strange problems with my chim I bought a couple of weeks ago.
The doors were playing silly bug**rs and the alarm would not arm with the fob.
I disconnected the battery for 30 seconds then reconnected and hey presto all is now fine.
The door locking can get its nickers in a twist now and again and thinks there's a door open
when there isn't so the alarm won't arm.
Check the switches at the bottom of the sill where the door closes and make sure you can hear a click
when you press them. (one each side)
If not, take them out and give them a good clean.

On the charging problem see if you can get you hands on a multimeter (dead cheap at maplins) and
check the voltage without the engine running. (should be about 12 volts)
Then start the engine and check the voltage again, it should be at least 13.8 volts, if not the
alternator is not working correctly. (or the regulator or brushes might be nackered)
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Paul.

Big Al.

Hi Kieran

Still got problems with the Alternator - although the car is drivable, it was
Kangaroo'ing up the road last night, speedo and rev counter going wild - and my stereo has decided to completely pack up

"apparently" there is nothing wrong with the Alternator.

Well stereo's not a problem - TVR FM much sweeter! I've used my stereo once, and that was whilst polishing! Since I had pre-cats removed, even cruise is too much for decent stereo sounds!

Does this mean no Sunday visit though??

Hi Kieran

I'm still hoping to attend Sunday - fingers crossed I might be able to sort
a few problems having a chat with some fellow owners!

If not, still a good chance to give it a run, have some grub and something to
do on a Sunday!

Chris
