I have pretty much convinced myself that when I get the rear silencers removed I am going to get an ACT induction kit fitted. Bar the obvious noise and grin factor is it likely to make any difference to performance? I'm not expecting any real power gains, perhaps it will rev a little easier?

Have to say that I personally didn't see any gains from this, but I'm sure every car is different and you might.

I 'thought' I noticed that it revved a little easier, it did seem to be more comfortable on tickover and responded a bit better to a quick change in throttle position.

My car definitely revved easier after the kit had been fitted, and kept going further up the rev-range. I think it was Corin who described it as giving a "Red Bull kick" up the rev-range, where previously one would have been in wheezing territory...

IMO - a great performance upgrade for not a lot of cash.

If your induction pipe is not kinked or has not collapsed in any way, I believe it is fine - the standard bore is so large that any increase in airflow by having smooth innards is going to be negligible.

However, at my last service, my air filter was changed for a brand new one. It is a smart-looking Pipercross foam unit. I definitely noticed a difference over the oil-caked abortion that had been on the car (I'm guessing) since new.

So, my recommendation would be save a few pennies, just buy one of ACT's K&N replacement filters for £50-odd. Induction kit is IIRC £180.

The standard induction pipe looks like it came off a tumbledryer and is (IMHO) a complete pile of cack...

My airfilter is pretty much covered in oily cack, just replacing that would be a lot cheaper as you say and there is nothing wrong with the existing pipe.

Hmmm

In my opinion it would be worth simply cleaning the existing filter (soapy water) as when I did this I noticed a big difference in throttle reponse. Due to its location a new filter will soon become covered in the oily gunk that the old one currently is.

If these air filters are the same as foam filters on bikes they're meant to be covered in oil, it's how they catch the muck!! So yes you can clean it but check if it needs to be reoiled after cleaning. Special oil is available to reoil the filter after cleaning.

Have heard that when Dyno tested the induction kit can be worth 10-15bhp.

They probably ran out when they were building yours and used tumble dryer hose...in which case, good move!

Mine, however, is fine. Tim Lamont (Mr ACT) even made the comment when I enquired about the kit, and whether it would make a difference. He said the filter is the source of by far the greatest benefit, especially if the standard hose has not collapsed or gotten kinked.

Of course, Nuggs, no-one thinks any worse of you for wasting your pennies....I'm sure we have all bought lots of "essential" goodies for our Tivs. I know I have!

Well stage one is in progress and I am going to Austec Wednesday! Induction kit/air filter is going on the back burner until I get time to get it done.

Now more importantly where are some good tunnels when driving from Crawley to West London?!?!

Me too! I'm going for a dyno run. I have a suspicion I may need a new cam...the car feels a little flat. What time will you be there?

The same - I have a business meeting at a Gatwick hotel, then am popping in for a dyno run - I fear the worst!

See you there!

Sorry to hear about the chim sharky. Hopefully it wont set you back too far in getting the Tuscan!
I know you asked about the opposite but I really can recommend the exhaust conversion!
