Hi,
are you sure it needs doing at the "knob" end (wait for it
).. the cables can slip within the little brass cable stops near the seat belts (ar fall off in my case) which give various symptoms, in my case before falling off, a twist for the drivers side would pop both doors at the same time !
Cheers
Matt.
PS I replaced the little brass thingy with a piece of "chocolate block" 5A electrical connector so I could get two screws onto the cable instead of the original one only.

Mark, if you really need to get to the silver knob there are two big self tappers under the flap covering the little cubby at the rear of the console and two small ones at the end of the console "ears" either side of the tunnel. Ideally you need to release the handbrake cable to get it vertical but I can (just) ease the gaiter over mine to get the console off. Some models have the door cables running through a compartment in the console (I've heard) - and don't forget the window switch wiring.
Let us know how you get on.

The cable has definately come off at the knob end as the door end is fine and i can pull the cable through from that end ie turning the knob does not affect the cable tension. I had a little poke around to try and remove the centre but was frightened of doing any damage. This was before I read your kind replies. Will have another more educated go. Is it difficult as I would get it fixed professionally if need be? Regards.
I had a hang-up with the all grey interior of my car and wanted to get som contrast in the console. I was toying with the idea of changing the leather gaiter colours so set about taking it off. On my car it was very simple. As I mentioned the only difficulty was easing the h/brake gaiter over the h/brake button but it just made it. I have later T5 box but that shouldn't make any difference. Whip the four screws out and have a go! Only then will you know how difficult it will be.

My cable has also just snapped on the passenger side. I have an early Chim with all the bits in the same place in the console (handbrake, door knob, gearstick). On mine, the door knob itself appears to be screwed on, but can't be renoved until you lock a bolt underneath it (to stop the whole mechanism turning). Because of the position of the gaiter and the ring under the knob, access to this is preety difficult unless you have a right angled wrench, which I don't! However, once you have got it off, the box is self-tapped in place as explained above, and I imagine the mechanism within is pretty self-explanatory.
It's going for a service tomorrow, so rather than wrestle with it, I'll add it to the list!
